SR40 Jamfest

Took our 2nd SR40 shooting today. Brand new...gave it a cleaning before we went. Jammed on the 3rd round, then about every round after that for 2 magazines.
Used:
Federal 165grFMJ
Winchester PDX1 180grJHP
Federal 135grJHP

Cycling was horrible. No FTE or stovepipes, just everytime I cleared the stuck round, I would shoot the next one, and then the one after that would jam up again. IDK what the problem is but the first SR40 had none of this. It was also the store display model. The one with the problems is brand spanking new covered in grease in the bag in the hardcase. Even now I try to cycle a magazine and it's doing the same thing. Closing up before the round is properly seated/lined up with the bore? Advice? Send it to Ruger?

Is the jam at the base of the feed ramp or is the slide catching the groove of the cartridge? Are you pulling the slide back to cycle or using the slide stop? Is it doing it with both magazines?

I'm pulling the slide back completely to cycle, and it does it on all 4 magazines that I have.

A good picture of the feed ramp may tell us a lot. A good picture that shows the details.

Better to take the barrel out to get the picture.

best I could do. We fail at pics. I compared it with my other SR40 barrel (that performs flawless) and there are no visible differences, burrs, chips, anything. Same slope. I think it could be my ejector, but not too sure. I'm going to swap my barrels in a few just to see what I get

Since you have two SR40s, swap the barrels around and see if it still does it. I'm a little perplexed as to why that would not feed. I don't own an SR40, but I know my other .40s would feed very well from that point.

I cant see anything obvious. Might not be enough chamfer around the chamber and the case might be catching on it. Good pics but still hard to tell on that part.

My 9c did that a couple times last time I took it out. When I cleaned it I found a burr had developed on the upper part of the ramp. I dont see that on yours though.

I think I would send yours back to ruger and see what they come up with. The only time I've had a constant problem like that was when I was using some crappy reloads in my KP944. They werent sized right and would keep hanging up on the case entering the chamber. Since you were using all factory loads that shouldnt be the case.

How many rounds are through that again? I don't mean it to be a personal attack, but that chamber and ramp looks like it could use another hard cleaning. It could be just the way it looks in the picture.

Can you put a round manually in the chamber when it is apart scandmx5?

The chamfer that Gizmo is talking about needs to be there and you can actually take a round and slowly send it up the ramp, with the barrel out of the gun, to find out if the round clears that chamfer cleanly. It is still hard to see from the pictures that chamfer, but that is where I would start looking and make sure it is scrubbed up good.

You could actually clean up that chamfer if you need to.

Yes I am aware it's dirty. Haven't cleaned it since I've been home from the range yesterday evening. Before we went, it was spotless. I assure you. It looks as if the line between the shell and the bullet meet is catching on the chamfer, but then I swapped barrels and it did it again. Sadly I'm going to have to send it in, but no chips on the metal.

Did you also switch out the magazines and the recoil spring from your old one?

If its doing it with both barrels and more then one mag I would suspect its not holding the mag where it should be. Either wrong angle or wrong height.

Another thing I noticed is that the 2011 model has slight magazine wobble when loaded or unloaded. The 2010 doesn't.

After closer inspection I also noticed the firing pin was sticking out above the bullet while it was jammed/before slide close. This was when manually racking the slide and not live fire.

I would send it in. Ruger can replace the spring and check for proper fitting on the extractor if that is what it turns out to be. Ask for a shipping label and you'll probably get a free mag too hopefully.

I have a 2011 sr40 and it has had zero issues. Only 100 rounds through it but so far its been great, I love it. I would just send it in, sooner you do it the sooner you get it back in working order. And I would recommend that anyone should have a good punch set...

Hmmm. I'm sorry to hear about the FTFs but now I'm wondering if maybe Federal has a problem with bullet setback they're not telling people about?
