They normally shoot a box of Blackhills ammo through the gun to confirm it's dead nuts good to go.

Highly doubtful .... anyway ... if it were the same height sight there would be absolutely no reason to do this ...

Hey REV, looks like they shot some Black Hills ammo through BB's pistol....or they're fibbing.. :?

Note that there was mention of a malfunction that the customer must have mentioned when they sent the gun in.

Doubtful a sight change only gets test fired.

No sir, they request you send the pistol along with a magazine for warranty repair to replace the front sight. Windage is adjusted off the front blade and they shoot it on paper to make sure the replacement sight is regulated. When the pistol is returned, it will even be noted that this is done along with listing the ammo used for regulation.

Best :)

You need to have more faith in Ruger. Mine went back for front site that was loose in the dove tail. They replaced the site and test fired 30 rounds of Black Hills 230gr before returning, nine days turn around . That was 1 1/2 years ago. More recently returned it for a barrel issue after 10-12,000 rounds. Got a new barrel, 50 rounds test fired. This time I took it to Prescott and spoke to their 1911 production mgr. Seven days return mail. They're good !!

Front sight broke on firing. Snapped off leaving base in dovetail. Ser.# 670-46xxx. Approximately 400 rounds. Never in a holster.

Hello,

There was no malfunction issue with my gun. The message said that they fired 30 rounds with customers magazine with no malfunctions. I put 200 more rounds down range this week and all is well, so far.

Same story here. About 400 rounds through the gun. Never been in a holster. Only stored in the soft case it came in. I've only used factory ammo - Blazer Brass, PMC Bronze, Remington UMC, etc. All of it 230gr RN. Sight just popped off on about my 50th shot today at the range. I've contacted Ruger. We'll see what they say. Serial # 670-459xx. Here's a before and after pic.

jwjohnson,

In my experience, Ruger will offer to pay shipping and will email you a shipping label with Fex Ex. They will want the gun packaged up and one of your magazines. They will want a short letter explaining the details. It was about a 10 day turn around on mine.

This is very strange and I know you are disappointed. Got mine back and have put 200 rounds down range without any further events. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If it happens again it will be night sights and local installation.

I hope Ruger understands how much this is causing a negative impact among 1911 shooters.

Everything I have seen says yes but we keep seeing more and more repeats of this.

That's exactly what happened. It's on it's way to Prescott now.

I have a belt slide holster from Dillon. It tore the front sight off my .45 Springfield. Some holsters are tough on sights and others can be if you use a drawing motion that moves the front sight into a bad position, despite the design of the holster.

Who notes original 1911 sights suck, especially at my age.

Just got my SR1911 back today with a new front sight and a cleaning cloth. It had been test fired with 32 rounds. I'm planning on heading to the range tomorrow. I'll see how it does.

I thought I would add this short comment about my front sight repair. After Ruger test fired my gun they made a sight adjustment to make sure the gun was shooting dead on.

My front sight was dead center prior to it breaking and the gun shot dead on.

Currently the front sight is noticeably to the left of center and as expected, the gun shoots 2 to 3 inches to the right at 15 yards. :x

I was firing at upper left, middle and lower left target.

Guess I will need to find someone with a sight pusher to center this sight up gain to get it back to where it was prior to the test fire and sight adjustment at Ruger.

I am not mad just frustrated.

If you've got a steady hand, a vise, a brass or nylon punch - just a couple tap, tap, taps and you'll probably be there. Just remember to strike the base, not the blade.

I recently removed my front sight to get some work done on the slide and it was easy as pie.

I have to ask, if you don't mind. What work was done on the slide Slim? Sorry if it is already in another thread and I missed it. Ed

Skalkaho Slim,

That is some good advice and I am going to follow it.

Bill, the trick to bumping a sight in a dovetail is to have the slide rock solid in a vise. Put 2 or 3 layers of masking tape on the slide flats so you don't mark it, if your vise has aggressive teeth do something more to protect your slide. I use a small brass punch and a small brass hammer, it really takes a light tap to move it when the slide is solid. Be patient and careful.

Hmm. If you move the front sight to the right, the point of impact will move further to the left, won't it?

Happened to me today, after about 120 rounds, had trouble getting a sight picture, looked at the front sight, top sheared off. Didn't hit anything, never holstered, only 2 months old.

This gun has been nothing but trouble for me. When I first took it to the range, the gun started to "slam fire" after about 40 rounds. Would fire 2 or 3 rounds per trigger pull. The hammer would not be cocked after cycling. Sent it to Ruger. They replaced the sear, disconnector and main spring, took 2 weeks for turn-around.

I ordered fiber optic sight to replace it myself.

If I had to do over, would have got the S&W or Springfield.

Funny story. ;) I was planning on getting the whole thing blackened (sent off to be melonited). My wife likes the stainless look so much, I decided not to do it (the things we do for women sometimes  ).

I had it completely stripped, ready to go. So I started to reassemble, starting with installing the sights. Bad case of not paying attention and I reinstalled the front site backwards. You'll notice that there is not a flat at the rear of the dovetail and that it is indeed forward of the dovetail. The sight ended up creating a small gouge in the top of the slide. So after about 20 minutes of redressing the gouge, it came out very nice, much nicer than I had hoped.

Needless to say, I went back upstairs to tell my wife that it was gonna be black any way. I've got a local finisher up here (Falcon Gun Finishing) that does outstanding work for some big custom names. I'm only getting the slide done as I'm nervous about the serial number on the frame becoming unreadable after blasting and coating. It's basically gonna look like the TALO edition.

So yeah, I forgot to mention before to make damn sure that front sight is on the right way before you start hammering away.

Another thing is that you'll notice at the corner of the sight base (I don't recall offhand which corner) that there is a slight bevel. This will tell you which side of the base is to be inserted into the dovetail as it's relieved a bit to aid in initial insertion.

I put my slide in a vice with a section of leather to provide protection. A few solid taps and I got that front sight moved to the right and back to center. Test fired it and it is back to where it was prior to sending to Ruger for sight repair. Put 150 rounds down range on Tuesday and it performed outstanding. All is well at the moment. Time and rounds down range will tell the story on this new front sight. 8)

The Saga continues....

I contacted Ruger customer support, they sent me a new replacement sight. Yesterday I took my 1911 to my gunsmith to replace the broken sight. He calls me this morning and told me it broke while he was pressing it into place. Said he never had that happen before. He said the sight had a hole in it (bad molding).

Why does Ruger produce a high quality gun only to equip it with a cheap piece of crap for a sight???

I will NEVER buy another Ruger product again. I expect it to work out of the box, am willing to accept a problem that gets resolved. I am not willing to spend a sizable amount of money to have a gun "waiting to be fixed all the time"

I thought Ruger had to have the gun back for a new front sight install ..... What happened to firing a box of shells thru it to be sure it was OK ? I guess they don't have enough ammo. I don't care WHO says it's Novak that makes these sights .... They are NOT the REAL Novak sights.

Sure hope the MIM company making these sights isn't making any camshafts with their MIM recipe ....

In fairness to Ruger .... The SR1911 is probably one of their guns with the least issues ever. Other than the sights ... It's been pretty much trouble free.

Sorry you got a dog ....

The sights come from Novak, which is not exactly thought of as a "cheap piece of crap" company. Stuff happens. We all wish it didn't, especially Ruger. I suggest you avoid buying anything and make all your own stuff - assuming you can get everything right every time...

The sights are Novak's product, and they have a VERY good reputation..... Ruger has nothing to do with making the sights. Novak is one of the best!

Absolutely! We just have a bad "lot" or some such, from Novak. Happens with EVERY maker on occasion. Whether it's a gun, washing machine, or Rolls Royce. We just get it fixed and move on.

Or the gunsmith told him it broke and wants to sell him a Glock. Call Novak, send the slide and have it night sighted.
