SR-22 problem

The guide rod and spring of my SR-22 are stuck in the frame--I can't pull them out to clean them. What did I do, and how can I fix it?

DBS I'm afraid I don't have any great solutions but I know exactly what your talking about, it happened to me in my SR40c, what I think happened is the recoil spring slipped off the barrel while the slide was moving forward to be taken off.

Eventually working with it I was able to get it apart. Finally after 10 minutes working with mine I got it to let go. I think it was while pulling it back gently it finally gave enough clearance to slide forward

When you pull the slide off that pistol, the spring and guiderod are just sitting there, they will fall out just by tipping the frame forward. I'm really confused by your post.

I think what may have happened is that the spring is jammed diagonally after falling off the barrel, not sure though.

That's definitely what is supposed to happen, but when I remove the slide mine are stuck where they insert into the frame below the barrel. I cannot pull them out, and they certainly don't come out by simply tipping the frame forward. They're stuck.

The spring isn't on the barrel, it is underneath the barrel with a guiderod that just sits in a shallow hole.

No worries Rei40c--I appreciate the offer of help.

The rod and spring are stuck in the shallow hole that Cheesewhiz mentioned. I don't think I can get them out without stretching and ruining the spring.

I've got an email in to Ruger customer service to see if they have any ideas. I'll keep you all posted, but in the meantime if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

BTW, the pistol still functions fine. In fact I put 400 rounds through it today.

Okay, you made me dig mine out, the spring is larger in diameter than the lug end, if for some reason it jumped over and into the shallow detent hole, the spring would be very tight in there.

..but that is almost impossible unless something very silly happened.

The smaller end should be toward the lug on the guide rod when inserted into the hole in the frame. If you put the larger diameter end the wrong way it will stick in the hole.

That must be what I did. I guess I'll just muscle it out and if the spring gets ruined in the process, well at least that's an inexpensive part.

That is definitely what I did.

Ruger wanted me to send them the gun for evaluation, with shipping on my dime. Instead of doing that, I figured if I just pulled and the guide rod broke or the spring stretched, I would just buy replacement parts.

So I pulled harder than I had dared to before, and the rod and spring both popped out unscathed. Once I could see both ends of the spring, it was clear I had put the wider end into the frame by mistake. Won't be doing that again.

Function check post-repair was fine. Props to Cheezewhiz and Sowhat for the accurate diagnosis.
