Someone brought up the target audience for TV commercials now. Of course they're going for black or brown. I just saw an AT&T Fiber commercial with Sofia Vergara. The whole commercial was in Spanish. No hinting around about their target there.

Never a surprise with these things. The left and especially show biz seems to be more prioritized on diversity than just about anything else. Watch when award nominations come up and how much the word is used. It does tend to lead the average American thinking those idiots have no care about quality so why even pay attention to them. The ratings for award shows reflect the attitude of the American viewers.

Statistics show about 41 million Americans speak Spanish at home.
Be foolish to not include that audience; at least if profits and / or market share are your goals.
Good business.

I’d say this is pro-business more than anti-American or anti-English speaking.

When I lived in Spain I spoke Spanish. When I came home I refuse to speak a foreign language. Folks tell me that to respect all the Spanish speakers I should speak to them in their native tongue. My response is simple.

I live three blocks from where I was born. I attended public school, served in the USAF and have conducted my entire life in English. I don’t see any reason to change now.

Darn few of us in the USA are speaking the “native language”.

But the natives didnt have any more immigration control than Biden does so ….. there’s that.

When I was in the corporate world it was company policy that English be spoken in the office. Employees could speak any language they want ON THIER OWN TIME.

Actually, what we call Native Americans aren’t. They immigrated hear from Asia. And very possibly the current folks are the second wave. So they weren’t even the original colonizers.

There is no federal law that specifies an "official" language for the country. That is something the politicians don't want to do for fear of upsetting some small minority voting blocks. I would encourage schools to teach other languages as part of a well-rounded education but we need legislation that specifies that all official business must be conducted in English and ONLY in English.

"In the first place, we should insist that the immigrant who comes here becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he should be treated on exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminant against any such man because of creed or birthplace, or origin. But it is predicated on the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Every man that says he is American, but something else also isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... we have room for but one sole loyalty and that loyalty is to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt

To me these words are about a country, any country for that matter. But in this case it happens to be ours, & think they ring very true. We can be diversified, yet standardized, with no intention of discrimination, just good for the country.
Nothing wrong with a standard language in business

Without some standardization there can be chaos. Paris Ky. decides they are all going to speak French, & London Ky. citizens start diving on the left side of the road. It seems about this silly in some parts of the country.

I surely don't want to ban Oktoberfest. All of us here came from somewhere else. It is natural for people to be assimilated into this county's fabric over time. This is America the most diverse country on earth. If you happen to see something, a commercial or billboard, in a different language that is just an example of how diverse we are. From the beginning of this country we have welcomed immigrants.

I have Direct TV and there are some Spanish speaking channels. I don't watch them since I don't speak Spanish. But I do expect the other channels that I watch and pay for to be in English.

Anyone remember Ozzie & Harriet? We've certainly come a long way since then but are we going in the right direction?

Anyone notice that the rating warnings before a program include Nudity, sex, bad language, and some others I forget, but now at the end of that list is "smoking". I guess kids should not see a movie with someone smoking in it now. Heaven Forbid !

Yeah, there are lots of Spanish speakers in America, I live in Tampa-St Pete, and there are all-Spanish radio stations here.
There are all-Spanish TV stations too, but I don’t watch TV much. It doesn’t bother me, since there are lots of Spanish speakers here.

I spent 1 & 1/2 years in Germany, and I have been in the situation of not speaking the language .

THat include test for driver's licenses, ballots for voting ect. Doesn't California have something like over 100 driver's license application forms in 100 different languages?

Period movies like Bonnie and Clyde or Gangster Squad would look kind of strange if none of the characters smoked.

But see, this couldn’t happen. I’ve heard 50% of the people in DFW speak Spanish. I’ve been to some grocery stores where I’m the only white guy. Are you telling me the employees in dealing with all their other customers must speak English? Why? And what difference does it make to anyone else? They speak English to me, what do I care what they said to the customer before me?

What about all the cool Asian neighborhoods? For example China town in San Francisco? Or the Chinese neighborhood in Seattle? Those places would lose their charm if they had to speak English.

And don’t even get me started on the tourism industry

A small business in a Spanish speaking neighborhood makes sense that they can speak only Spanish if the3y want. I don't expect them to speak English to 5% of their customers.

I don't expect Stater Bros. supermarket in Hemet to start Spanish only in their store. They have a very diverse employee staff in the store. I'm sure if a Spanish speaking person needed help with something, they could find someone to accommodate him or her. I'm talking about something I'm paying to use or deal with.

Proof that 'immigrants' no longer assimilate into American society but create their own or carry their past social behavior into their 'new homeland'.
I used to verbally assault the many Asians who came into this area due to the university by loudly proclaiming that the accepted language was English and they should speak English or keep quiet.
I could be arrested for this now.

Like many topics,, this thread brings up some very different views of life for us.

Yes,,this is America,, and it was built by a group of people who came here from other countries, AFTER taking it away from the Native Americans. The ones who we look at as the Founders of America,, spoke English.
Our Country grew & prospered under the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the laws,, all written, spoken & practiced in english.
As other nationalities of people came here,, they accepted America as their home,, AND learned to speak english. They were also allowed, WITHOUT fear of prosecution to practice things that were native to their country of origin. From speaking their native language, to celebrating their history & culture. They brought a diversity of things,, which was also accepted here,, because of the way our laws & such were written.
But the primary language for almost 2 centuries was english, and they accepted that. In fact,, many immigrants were PROUD of America and PROUD to learn english. Yet,, they also made sure their children learned their homeland language.

But now,, it seems that we are being forced to accept a second language, by a segment of the population, that refuses to do as so many others have done before them,, including their ancestors. We are being forced to accept illegal people here,, AND are even giving away taxpayer money to them, as well as taxpayer funded programs. Mentioned above,, is how a TV service,, such as Direct TV has spanish speaking channels. You PAY for the Direct TV service,, but if you do not speak spanish,, then you are paying for something you can't use. Is that fair?

But let's look at it a bit differently.

I think it's very discriminatory to promote the acceptance of Spanish,,,,,,,,,,,, to the many other ethnic groups,, such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Italian, German, French, etc who are not given the same concessions as the illegal peoples we seem to be allowing to shape things.
If you are going to accept TV channels in spanish,, then why not do it in all other languages? Or road signs, or voting ballots, or the myriad of things used in this Country? Are we not discriminating against these minorities?

Using our history of how this Country was founded by english speaking people,, and all the legal things were done in english,, and for 2 centuries everyone learned english when they came here as a "standard" language, why NOT only use just it on all things public?

That way,, you are not discriminating against anyone,, AND making sure all who come here want to be American?

Otherwise,, you get a division of peoples. As noted above, you can go to big cities (and also many smaller ones,) and you will have "Little China," or "Germantown" or "Little Mexico," or "Little Tokyo", or "Korea Town," etc.

A very wise saying; "Stand together & be strong,,, or get divided & you will fall." If we keep dividing everyone,, soon America will fall.

We can have our melting pot of people,, and still be America. But a standard of ONE language is necessary for us to stand strong together. We can allow them, as we have done for centuries, to keep their languages in their homes & communities,, but also make english as the standard language so all can be legally understood & accepted. That way,, we are a strong, undivided America,, and not fractional countries within the borders of America.

"United we stand,, divided we fall."

Exactly. The earliest writings/drawings tell of them crossing the land bridge and completely wiping out those who were here. They simply did, but more effectively, what later Europeans did. They invaded and conquered those who were here.

Contender, thank you for being a voice of reason. You are correct, this thread certainly does show a great divide in views of life among the commenters here.
