I have 2 GP100`s and looking for a SP101...does anyone know if the SP101 trigger is the same as the GP100 trigger....I have worked on the GP100 trigger and it`s very good now and wanted to know if they are alike......If they are I`m assured to get a very good trigger that I now have on my GP`s....Jim

I have both a GP100 and a sp101 and have done trigger work on both, (lighter weight trigger & hammer springs. The trigger groups on both revolvers are similar, but not exactly the same, (size). I put the lightest weight springs available in the kit on each revolver. The results were much more effective on the GP100 than on the sp101, larger parts on the GP provides more leverage and just a different feel. This has been my experience anyway.

Hi....Did you order Wolff springs... were there different springs for the SP?... I just received springs for the GP but have not installed yet....With the lightest springs are you having any light strikes or misfires?

I`ve dryfired the GP about 3000 times now and the trigger has become VERY GOOD and I will be experimenting with the springs now.

I`ll be getting a SP and wanted to do target shooting with it also....Do you think the SP`s trigger has turned out to be as good as the GP`s trigger...or does it just feel a bit different as you say....Thanks Jim

Yes, it was the Wilson spring kits that I used, ordered them through Brownell's. No, I haven't encountered any missfires or light stikes so far, but, I just use it for target and range shooting, the GP100 that is. I probably wouldn't want to run the lightest springs in it if it were to be used for home defense etc. No, the sp101 trigger pull didn't turn out as well as the GP100 did, but a lot of it is that I have large hands, and the trigger on the sp101 just doesn't fit me that well. But, I haven't had any missfires on the sp101 either.

My GP100 is a new one, and it had a surprisingly good trigger action new out of the box, and the spring kit just made it amazing.

I have been very pleased with the pull on my DAO SP101 considering I did nothing to it other than clean, deburr and do some very light stoning and polishing in a couple of places before I fiddled with the springs. No, it is not as good as a similarly prepared GP-100, but it isn't bad by any means. (Right out of the box, it was nothing to write home about though.)

I bought the Wolff SP101 kit (3 mainsprings and 1 trigger spring) and initially installed the 12 lb mainspring... it did improve the pull enough for me to appreciate it. After having had no misfires so far, I pulled that spring and put in the 10 lb spring to see how that does. Time will tell.

Even though I suspect doing so would make the pull even more pleasant, I did not change out the stock trigger spring, as I don't want the reset any lighter than it already is.

Thats good to hear deafrn...I`m interested in making a number of Mods to the SP101...one of which will be a bobed DA only... so the trigger is important to me....My GP`s trigger is turning out so good... I just wish the SP would be the same but it`s not and I`ll have to work with it...Years ago I used to have some Smiths and the triggers were very fine but that was then....Doesn`t seem like many do trigger work to the SP because I`ve been asking questions around and haven`t received many responces....when I did that with the GP many responded...what got me started on the SP I saw some of the Gemini custom SP`s.... I`m sure it will all work out...Jim

I have both a SP and GP that are tuned. As noted above the trigger of the SP will never be quite as light as the GP. It is a matter of leverage with more on the medium frame gun. This situation is not unique to Ruger but applies also to S&W and Colt. Can the trigger of the SP be improved? Yes. My SP started with a 14 lb DA and I managed to get it to 8.4 lbs with no misfires using the 8 lb trigger return spring and 9 lb hammer one along with some internal polishing. Since then, I put in the 10 lb as I use it as one of the home defense guns. As a comparison the GP with the same spring weights has a double action of 7.4 lbs vs. the 8.4 of the SP. I might note that the SP wound up with a lighter trigger than a small frame Colt Magnum Carry that I had. I doubt a small frame Smith would work much lighter than 8 lbs in DA, also. The small frame Smith also has a coil mainspring and not the leaf used in the other models so has a bit of a different feel.

People that work on the SP include:
Don Williams of the Action Works
Magnaport
Gemini Custom
Apex Tactical (Randy Lee)
Cylinder & Slide
Teddy Jacobson (Actions by T) - semi retired
TJ Custom
Grant Cunningham (has a waiting list)

I am sure there are many more as there is not much of a difference in the actions of the GP and SP. As to the bobbed hammer it allows the use of a lighter mainspring than otherwise as mass is reduced which increases hammer velocity which increases energy on the firing pin. Apex Tactical is very familiar with lightened hammers as Randy offers his custom ones for Smiths which in the "game guns" can get DA down to about 4 lbs. Somewhere I recall reading he built a 66 for carry with a 6 lb DA.
