sp101 re chamber???

2 questions for you guys. 1st has anyone modified a 357 sp101 to accept moon clips to shoot 9mm? just curious if it can be done and how it might work out.. 2nd- what do you think of opening the barrel up to 41 magnum and have a custom 5 shot cylinder made to shoot the 41's?? looking at the gaps between the cylinder and frame it seems a slightly larger cylinder would fit in there, possibly allowing for the larger 41 magnum?? what say you? chris

Double Nope. 9mms have tapered cases and .355 bullet diameters so a .38/.357 chamber, cylinder throat and bore are all oversized. You could get the SP101 in .357 modified to take .38/.357 in moon clips but 9mm would not give you any kind of decent accuracy without a cylinder/barrel exchange.

For your .41 idea you don't have enough room in the cylinder for a 5-shot .41. It can be done in .41 Special on a Security/Service/Speed Six platform or GP100.

I shot a lot of plated and jacketed .355" 9mm bullets in my .357s during the shortages in '08-'09 with very good results.

The 9mm conversion is doable. Costs $250 last I checked.

Less costly, and probably much quicker to get back would be a 38/357 Moon Clip Conversion. $115.

Actually the conversion is doable and is offered by one of the moonclip conversion companies. All reports are that is shoots as accurately as the 9mm/.357 blackhawk convertibles. The bullets are only one thousanth different which seems to work fine.

OK, but I assume you loaded them in .38Sp or .357 brass, right?

The American Rifleman had an article by C. E. Harris in the October 1981 issue on loading 9 mm bullets in .38Sp brass and .38/.357 bullets in 9 mm cases. He concluded that given suitable powder charges for the bullet weight, it worked fine both ways.
