I will be gettin my 3" sp101 357 in a week or so. I know that all guns like different ammo but where is a good place to start with .38 and 357 for the 101? What seems to shoot well in these revolvers?

thanks

I shoot Speer Gold Dot 125gr and winchester PDX1 130gr 38 spl +P, and they work great. I also like 125gr Speer Gold dot .357

Another vote for the Speer Gold Dot in both 38spl +p and the 357 magnum.
Prefer the 135 grn 38 +p

Mine eats anything. When I wanna shoot all day I use .38 spcl. Magtech Blueline 158 gr. lead round nose. Call me crazy, but they're cheaper than dirt ($15 for a box of 50) and they still shoot straighter than I do. And it will feel like you're shootin' a 22.

When I wanna turn up the heat I use .357 mag Buffalo Bore 158 gr. jacketed hollow cores. In my opinion, this is some of the baddest factory ammo you can buy. Shoot them all day out of an SP101 and you'll think you shut your hand in a car door. And (at about $1.25 per round) you'll also be broke.

And BTW....if you shoot the Buffalo Bores DON'T FORGET your earplugs!

For a carry round it is hard to beat the Remington Golden Saber in .357. It is a mid-range round so it is a step up from the .38+P and .357 Speer SB and it is more controllable than the full bore .357's.

+1 Yep, they like 158gr rounds the hotter the better. I also use MagTech, both 38special and 357mag for practice ammo but the jacketed stuff.

I also like Federal American Eagle soft points in 357mag. They are reasonable and they have some punch.

For carry ammo I like Federal Hydra-shok. Very accurate. 8) 8)

I like Winchester 110 grain 357 JHP you can buy at Walmart. Cheap, recoil like a 38+P with 100 lbs more energy at the muzzle. Seem to shoot where I aim them too. Old school LE load.

I mix and match several types of 38's, 38+ps and 357s. But I can say that my 2.25" SP101 is most accurate with 158gr 357s.

The factory sights are set for a 158gr 357 Magnum factory load.
For SD, I use 135gr Speer 357 Magnum GDHP-"Short Barrel" ammo in my 2 1/4" DAO model. It is best to practice with the same ammo you plan to carry.

Ok anyone know the velocity of the factory rounds using 158 gr bullets? That would make it a bit easier to find a load out of the book. I know they are probably different so if you know your velocity of your factory round please list it.

I'll try to find a listing of ammo and velocities in the meantime.

thanks
