Some steal anything

5 guys with 2 pickup trucks and a bucket truck stole a mile long stretch of 3 phase copper service cable to an industrial plant that was closed for vacation near here several years ago. They rerouted the lower voltage service so the alarm system was working and stripped the copper inside the plant as well. They knew what they were doing

My first thought was: "How do you haul something that size away without someone noticing it?"
I'd say there's some Goat DNA somewhere on sight.
How else are the Middle Eastern and Chinese nationals gonna communicate with the motherland when they take out our power and 5G grids.

Anyhow, i dont think
Meth heads have that much intestinal fortitude anymore.

But we are talking Alabama.
So who knows.
Or Biden sold it thinking it was part of the border wall.

Google "electrocuted stealing copper". The image results are shocking. 😳
I was working a midnight shift when I was Chief Engineer for a college. It was on the edge of a bad part of the city. I heard a boom and saw a green flash a couple blocks from the Powerhouse. The power went out and our generators kicked in. The power was out for a couple of hours before it went back to utility from emergency. There was a vaporized crack head in a transformer station who caused the problem. I must say that he was instantly rehabilitated and will never steal anything else...

It's not always crack heads, sometimes it's professionals that get ahead of themselves. Our plant was down for annual turnaround. It was usual practice to have the 4160 switch gear cleaned and serviced. I was sitting in a boiler room (hey, had to play cards somewhere, and it was the one place that had it's own back up generator) that had a nice clear view of the switch gear. Bright flash and very loud bang.

The crew servicing the switch gear had forgotten to degauss the equipment. Both survived. Both had flash burns and the one was just never the same mentally.

Okay, I'll admit it.. a long time ago... probably 50 years or so I climbed the fence of one of those high voltage transfer stations and stole a big coil of copper wire..... never did anything with it.... I think a friend in need ended up selling it, at least I hope he did. When I was young there was a time when I wanted to grow up to be a cat burglar....

They probably just went to the site with the equipment necessary to dismantle the tower & remove it. From what the article stated this site was not regularly manned or observed. If one had the intestinal fortitude to just act like they were supposed to be there it is likely no one would question what they were doing too much. The question in my mind is what did they do with it. Have they just sold it for scrap or are they planning on using it somewhere else.

I want to know who steals razors so often even the bag of cheap Bics are locked up?
When my wife and I were Home Depot merchandisers we could not keep faucet displays in good shape because the parts got stolen.
Out on my oil lease a big coil of nasty super greasy, twisted and kinked swab line got taken, seriously, who want to get that dirty?
