Last week I received a S&W model 64 from another agency.

The gun was stolen back in 2007 in a burglary of a habitation

About 18 months ago I was notified that the gun had been recovered by the agency but the way it was recovered was with a drive by shooting and it was being held as evidence.

I followed up and made sure the gun had our hold placed to prevent it from being destroyed following their disposition. I had called a couple of times to keep tabs on the status of their case and to make certain my hold was still in place.

About three (3) weeks ago I followed up once more and was told the person had pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and they were done with the gun.

I got it in our possession last week and contacted the victim and told him he could pick up his gun whenever he could come to the station.

It is such a great feeling to get property back to the rightful owner. The gun was in good condition for which I was grateful.

It doesn't happen nearly as often as I would like, but occasionally we get to score one for the good guys.

Is that 2014 cop-talk for "a home robbery"? My hamster has a habitation.

Good ending indeed. Too bad all department policies didn't REQUIRE return of recovered stolen private property (that ol' "protect and serve" thing).

Glad you were able to recover the gun and get it to it's rightful owner. It bothers me that department procedure requires destroying the gun for any reason. In Alaska one of the NRA attorneys sued over it and now the policy is to make guns available through auction to purchase. Still requires a 4473 being filled out but people can go to the auction and make a go at buying a firearm for a descent price. I guess I don't see any point of destroying a perfectly good firearm. If you hadn't been on it the rightful owner may not have gotten his own property back. Thank you for that.

It is GOOD to see a LEO do as you have done. You are doing the job as it's intended, not as it's done in some places. Good for you!

Great work PC
I am sure the owner was very grateful = I sure would be

Keep up the great work !!

Burglary and robbery are not the same thing.
Glad the gun was recovered and returned. I had one stolen in a burglary that was recovered 13 years later.

I wish my MK I Target would show up. The local police call me about once each year asking if I have seen it. Last time I told the officer that if I had found it I would have called THEM. If I knew where to look I would have done so a long time ago.

FoxMike,

They are completing NCIC validation regarding your gun. I do the same thing for my agency.

In order to keep your gun in NCIC, we have to make contact on a yearly basis and determine the gun is still missing.

I hope you find this helpful.

Good news and who knows...this gun may actually help save a life someday in an act of home or personal defense.
