Snubbies at distance

I read something the other day where the author said the snub nosed revolver was pretty much useless after 10 or 15 yards. I decided to put that to the test. I took my little 649 out to 25 yards with some of my small game hunting loads, 130 grain SWC's with 4.7 grains of Win 231. I shot the gun offhand, one handed and you can see for yourself. Trying to even see the sights at that distance were kind of tough and while certainly not good enough for hunting, it certainly would make it hot for an opponent not that I could ever imagine wanting or trying to explain a defensive shooting at that range. Still it did pretty well all things considered.

Nice shooting. I have banged the 100 yard 12" gong a bunch with my 2 1/2" Security Six using Win white box 38's. This with elbows rested on a bench. It is really amazing how so few that shoot handguns can really shoot them.

I shot snubbies at longer ranges & had very favorable results. Are they target guns? No. But can they be effective out beyond the 10-15 yds that one "author" suggests? Absolutely!!!!

You definitely don't want me shooting at you even at 50 yards with my 2.5" M-66 S&W. Not bragging on my shooting, just complimentary of the gun. The problem with short barreled revolvers is not intrinsic accuracy, it's just the shooter's ability to hold a consistent sight picture with the short sight radius. The better sights on the snubby K-frame .357 are an advantage, too, when compared to a 5-shot pocket .38. I also have a 3" adjustable sight S&W M-60-4 that is super accurate. The 3" barrel helps, as do the adjustable sights.

Good shooting, and thanks for sharing your results. People in general do not realize what a practiced individual can do with a good handgun, even a snubby. Practice and familiarity are the key.

I prefer snubs and my EDC is a Bodyguard. I don't shoot long distacnes but what I've noticed is after years of snub practice that anything with a 3-4" barrel seems like cheating.
