Taking some pics today and saw this. Type1 Flatgate of course...........Looks to me like the 8 is stamped over a 4.....?????
Observations & opinions welcome.

OK, everybody knows I am not an expert on SA's, however, the 1798 number is all on the same plane with the same size numbers which would tell me it was probably roll stamped not hand stamped. That said, the 4 underneath is a "skinny" number and didn't they use that type of stamp for very first production and prototypes and such? Just asking. Could it have been a very early frame (only) and was then used to make a complete production revolver? I haven't had a chance to get into any of my Ruger books to look at/research things (getting my stuff together for Tulsa).
 
To me, it looks as if the eight was roll-stamped with the complete four-digit number , somehow over a lightly-stamped four.

The fourth digit being slightly misaligned is not uncommon.
 
I don't know... looks to me like someone tried to alter or damage the serial number. ATF could come after you for it, luckily for you, I work for an FFL and will gladly destroy the gun for you. Better safe than sorry. I'll PM you the address ;)
