My little town has the "Welcome to" and the "Y'all come back!" signs on the same post.

We're so fur back in the hills, even the Presbyterians handle snakes!

There was one in Hubert, N.C, that had a sign that said Hubert on the front and back of the post, and one in Hollis, Arkansas the same. Hollis had a house, a barn and a general store....

We just lost small town status. They just put up the second stop light in the county this last fall....

A few miles outside of Winchester, Virginia, on Route 522, is the community of Nain. It also has both signs on one post. Years ago, Nain had a post office. Now there are a few houses and a convience store.

My Grandma lived in Bloomingdale, PA; Don't know the population count, but it had a General store with ONE gas pump, a furniture store AND a one room school house, 1st thru 8th grades, TWO churches and a cemetery.

Yep! In the town where I grew up there was a sign, "Welcome to Harrisonville". On the reverse side, "Good Bye, Come Again." The Post Office was in the postmistress' living room; my dad was the Police Chief and the 'police headquarters' was our house, with police records in cardboard file boxes under our kitchen table, and weapons stored in mom's linen closet! There was one (well) used patrol car, and dad, who was a welder by trade, was paid $500 per YEAR to serve as Chief. The nearest store, gas station, etc., were in the next town, 5 miles away. When I joined the Fire Dept., as a 16 yr. old junior member in 1973, the apparatus consisted of two Buffalo pumpers, a 1946 and a 1947.

Things have changed there drastically, but not for the better. Not at all.

Small town and a long time ago...We moved to Cedar Rapids, Nebraska (Not Iowa) in 1956 after our wedding in Denver.....Cedar Rapids was about 400 at that time...less now...anyone on the board know what a shivaree is? Anyone ever have one? If you have you are near 80 and know about small midwest towns...if not...sorry

A shivaree was a party held for newly weds. Neighbors and friends would get together and pull jokes on the couple, usually try to get the groom drunk, keep them busy while others tied tin cans behind their car etc before seeing them off on their honeymoon.
