Single six top strap

Is this a normal topstrap for an old model single six or has it been modified? The serial number is,a little over 119000

From what I could tell,,,, yes it appears normal. Maybe a bit over polished,,, but normal contours.

Most top straps I have seen are flat with a sharp line around the edge, maybe I ha entry seen enough.

More of a flat top on the adjustable site models but for a fixed site gun this looks pretty normal to me too.

It looks as though someone has removed the sharp edges and made the top more rounded. Other than that it looks like all my OM frames.

Foxmike is spot on, that top strap was Rounded , and I do not want to say "well", it was NOT a good job at all.............
supposed to be "flatter" ,like this.........

It appears there is also a extra hole where the firing pin retention pin goes. ???

My guess: Somebody wanted a "early OM Ruger Vaquero".

Spend some time to clean the lines up front to back, side to side, small little drift rear sight, 3.6" barrel, OM Bisley Hammer, Brass birdshead gripframe stocked in some perty figured walnut and one has a neat small slipping packin pistol.

Yes, whoever had it before me converted it to center fire. But didn't put the nre firing pin in but boogered up the old retaining pin hole to drill the new one.
I want to rebuild it as I have the original rubber grips and aluminum frame to go with it, but its on the list. Gotta start buying parts.

Is that a steel or alum alloy frame? I think it must be steel. The alloy frames had a set screw hole in the dovetail.

It doesn't have proper depth left in the dovetail so any sight you put in it will stick up and may not be tight enough. And if you file off the bottom of the dovetail on the sight, it'll be way too loose. The dovetail cut in the top strap should be cut deeper. Or weld it up and make a one of a kind old model Vaquerito.

What center fire caliber are you planning for it?

Hondo44, it's a steel frame. That's the way it was when u purchased it. As you can tell I have a soft spot for abused guns. I was thinking of a .32 but after emailing and looking up the numbers, the .218 bee looks interesting.

The dovetail, if cut deeper,would have to be made oversize. That would not be an issue to a machinist, he would simply make a new sight. Hondo's suggestion of filling with weld and making a fixed sight frame out of it is the way I would go. Most of the
Bottleneck center fires would be to long for the cylinder in their factory form. How about a wildcat?

Yes you're right. I wasn't very clear, I meant the dovetail should BE deeper, not to cut it deeper. Like you say it will now be too wide if cut deeper. A guy could use as is though, now I think about it, by putting a set screw under it like the alloy frames.

I shoot shortened versions of both the 218 Bee and 32-20 in single six 32 frames. They're kind of wildcats but simple to reload because no wildcat dies are needed. Standard dies work fine. Some brands may need the seating die body shortened a bit but that's a simple matter.

And that was my intent. Add additional center fire calibers to the single six w/o requiring special dies, custom barrels or lengthened frames. Just re-chambered cylinders.
