Shooting the GP100

I happen to have a 6" SS full lugged GP in .357 mg.

I got interested in seeing what I could get out of the 180 gr. Hornady XTP bullet in terms of accuracy and velocity. The results are, in my opinion, surprising.

12.5 gr. of AA9 got me 1215 fps and the groups are running 3-1/2" on an average of 10 5 shot groups at a measured 100 yds. the largest being 5" and the smallest being 3".

Now, This is with a 2X leupold scope and was shot from a sandbag bench rest.

I am a little surprised that a completely stock GP would deliver that kind of accuracy. Am I just lucky? or is this just par for this gun? This is the first time I scoped a revolver and fired it off the bench, although I have shot the Contender from the bench a lot......with groups not that much better.

I'd say the 3.5 group size is better than I could do.
Good shooting. The gun can do it, and the 6' bbl is the best for accuracy and doesn't surprise me at all.

I too have a 6 in. ss full lugged GP100 and it's nice to read your range report. I guess I can't blame poor shooting on the gun :lol: :lol:

Thanks for the comments guys, I figure that there was probably an aiming error of an inch or so, I was shooting at a white paper plate and the scope was just 2 power. At times I kinda wish I had a Ransome Rest setup....

My blue 6" full lug GP100 is bone stock and the accuracy is amazing. I have a used 6" sitting at my dealer right now and I hope it shoots just as good.

I also have a half lug 6" that I mounted a Trijicon red dot on, and I shoot it out to 100 yards all the time, holding my shots withing a B-27 Silhouette from kneeling hold is easier than I had previously thought. From a sandbag rest I can make headshots at 100.

The GP100 can surely be capable of exceptional accuracy. I have an older article where a 6" GP100 along with 5 other 6" 357s were Ransom Rest tested with 14 kinds of ammo at 25 , 50 , 75 and 100 yards. Twelve shot groups were fired at each distance with every revolver and with all 14 types of ammo.

Their GP100 turned in 100 groups ranging from 3.70" - 9.98". The 3.70" was turned in with Federal 180 JHP. Hornady 140 XTP ammo was close at 4.25".

As a note all the ammo was factory loaded. This was Shooting Times Dec. 1993.

The groups you are shooting with a 2X scope are impressive. I may have to try some 100 yard revolver groups one of these days too!

Great shooting. Maybe you are a little lucky, but I would say overall GPs have great accuracy. I enjoy mine and it is always a pleasure to shoot. It's not scoped, and I don't know that if it was I could shoot this well, but I have always been happy with the gun. Keep up the good work.

Not scoped yet , but with 358429 170grSWC my 6" is alot more accurate than I am !!!

Open sites with wrists supported only I can dance all over & around a 3" dot at 50yds.

I recieved on of these MTM rests for Christmas & it does ok .
I rest the frame not the barrel , it changes POI & groups do shrink alittle 8)

First, that's good shooting.

Second, I've had a S&W Model 29 (4"), Redhawk (5.5") and a number of Ruger .45 Colt SA's which would stay under four inches with a full cylinder at 100 yards, shooting from a rest of course. The current Vaquero will do it and I've come to the conclusion that I won't keep any hunting revolver around, unless it will.

These old spinny guns with all the holes in them generally shoot better than most folks give them credit for.

That is great accuracy with a GP. Someone once told me a 180gr bullet could not be stabilized by a revolver handgun. I guess that blows that theory out of the water at 100 yards. :mrgreen:

2x scope? Well my eyes are too old for that at a hundred yards with a handgun. But I also hava a 6" GP and I am amazed at its accuracy. I haven't taken the time to really try to find out its true potential. I usually don't shoot it beyond 25 yds. But I will say that I am more accurate with that gun than I am with any other handgun I own. I have never doubted that I was going to hit what I aim at with the GP. I am not fond of the sights but then again I am not fond of any of my Ruger's sights.

Am playing around with 2400 and that bullet seated out, to use in a SS BH.. Need to get my hands on a Chrony before I go further. steve b
