Just saw two 12-14yr old boys walking down our road. My Lab barked, they never looked up from their e-devices in their hot little never to be men hands. They are not out putting up hay, mowing their yard, catching bluegills for dinner, gigging frogs. They will get to vote and breed sad little over weight replicas of themselves. Bleep.

Mom must have kicked them outta the house, unfamiliar territory it seems. If we want to save America, we don't need to ban guns, we need to burn couches.

When that age I was out and about, doing yard work OR working a trotline on Rhode River with my good buddy Bill. If I had even THOUGHT of staying in the house on a good day my Mom would have thrown me out. Went to dinner the other night at a Texas Roadhouse and the table next to me had four people...all looking at or playing with their electronic whatevers; no conversation whatever.

I see it too and it ain't just the kids! Last Saturday we went to the car races (rained out) but in the bleachers there was a dad sitting with his son. The dad had two phones going full blast. The kid just sat there. No talk that I saw for a good hour. That was a good reminder for me. Do youngish how many parents I see ignoring their kids just like this idiot in the bleachers? Mom's texting while their kids play, or dad's focused on their tablet while the kid is ignored?

Those kids learned from adult example. They didn't pick that behavior up all by themselves.

I was at a doctor's office recently and some old geeks were doing the same thing.

I will defend old geeks in doctor's offices who are fiddling with their phones. I do it there. What else are you supposed to do while sitting in a doctor's office waiting room with only sappy magazines available? Lots of women's magazines and Time which is only second to Mao for being leftist. Nope, this is one geezer geek who'll see what's happening on this forum while waiting in my doctor's office.

Parenting.
It's that simple.
My granddaughter is almost 14. She still does not have a cell phone. She does chores after school, and during the summer. She "works" in the Jim Chambers shop with her Mom as well. She will also be with the family during a trip to Friendship, to the beach, and is attending a summer camp. She has a list of books to read during the summer. All in all,,,, she is doing "things" vs. spending time in front of a TV or on some form of modern social media with a mobile device.

When you get kids involved in activities, WITHOUT their cell phones, they do other things. It's how you structure these other activities that can determine what kind of person they are. Monitor their friends & what they are doing. Because if you just turn them loose,,, they can still get in trouble. Still, we have way too many folks who are so immersed into their little electronic devices, the reality passes them by.

I'm about to retire & thinking about getting a cell phone, but just reading about the possible cancer issues kinda makes one think if it is needed. Turning one into a zombie is something else!

Having it for emergency use while out & about or to the range, many times alone may might come in handy. Perhaps one of them old flip phones,....but then one with data & a big screen & I can check out the "ruger forum"....

Who knows, maybe I'll become a retired zombie....

I play Solitaire on my phone while I wait !!

Worrying about cancer from exposure is more an issue for kids, who will be exposed for decades.

If you're retiring - relax and add things for convenience/safety.

You are probably right & I will be getting a phone for piece-of-mind....
June 24'th is my last day at school ( as I work for a local school board),....yahoo. 8) Range time & lots of it coming up! :D

Was at the doctors office the other day with 4 or 5 people all with their heads down and twiddling their thumbs. Then one great big black gentleman sitting next to me said in a big booming bass voice "GOOD MORNING SIRI" It was all I could do to keep from busting out laughing. I recently got an IPhone 5S because my carrier offered it to me for $200 full price. I actually got it to make getting pictures from the phone to my computer easier should I run across a good photo opportunity, but I simply refuse to talk to this thing or have it talk to me. My last phone had no way to get pics to my computer.

Get a grip people. The world extends beyond your two hands. While in situations like the docs waiting room, I can still amuse myself with my own thoughts.
