Ok, I got the barrel cut down to 5 1/4 inches and new sights front and rear. New grips and off to the range. I was shooting 240 grain magnum rounds from 25 / 50 and 100 yards. You can see in the target that my first group was about 3 inches high while aiming at the 6 o'clock of the bull. Not a bad group. Rear sight is all the way down with no room for adjustment. Next I fired some at 50 and expected the group to drop but it was much higher. And last, I fired about 6 from 100. Only a few ended up on the paper. All high. I think I need a taller front sight. Any suggestings? Does the shorter barrel require a taller front sight? Gun shoots great but not something I will want to shoot a bunch of in full power 44 mag. I am getting better at not flinching.

Yes, you definitely need a taller front sight. This is normal with shorter barrels, sometimes even when they come out of the box from the factory.

You are lucky with a stainless gun you can change the front sight blade without too much trouble. I think you just have to order the tallest one Ruger has. :D :D

Yes I was. I headed out to that wonderful facility that was build only 8 miles from my home and took advantage of all it offers. I am a lucky guy. Great modern range with friendly staff.

What do you think, are there better front sight options out there. I know I need taller but is there a style that would really help with visibility. I will start searching but if someone has something to offer....

Yes it is a great facility. I am a member and go out when I can. From your target it looks like you are laying them in there in a consitant patten.
So it appears your sight picture is just fine. Of course if your eyes are old like mine, you just do the best you can. I would go only with a taller sight, you might get two different sizes. Easy enough to just pin in and out. Personally I do not do well with the Hi-Viz stuff etc.

I am very happy with the groups. Just need to move them down and the taller front sight is what is called for. I will be 50 years old next year and I wear glasses but so far I can still hit some stuff. Best part is that all I need to see clearly is my front sight well aligned within the rear sight with the blurry target down range lined up center mass. I can still see that front sight.

just give ruger a call and tell them what you need they sent me mine free of charge but not sure if they still do the free part

AMEN to that, Brother! I need taller front sights on my .22's, .32's, .44's, .45's.........

Get the front sight blade for the 4-5/8" barreled .45 cal. Stainless Steel Blackhawk.

Here's one on a 7-1/2" .45 shooter that I have.

Or, one can round up a piece of 1/8" cold rolled steel and carve away everything that doesn't look like the sight you want.....

Lousy Image, but the Super has a homemade front sight and the Single-Six has a "modified", i.e. stretched, Ruger sight.
