First time trying to get a pic on this forum. Hope it works. I have this SBH 44 mag. 5 1/2 inch barrel I bought in 2001. What is this grip frame?

Welcome to the Ruger Forum.

Looks like your garden variety XRN3-RED grip frame. Suitable for the shorter barrel New Model Super as well.

I have one on my New Model Blackhawk .45 Cal 7-1/2" too. Feels good. Make sure to get a steel ERH as well. I like it.

I don't know if it works on the longer barrel SBH.

I'm certain some of the experts will report pretty soon.

Thanks for the gracious reply Hugh. Do you know why my pic did not have a clickable link in my post? Also, Is this frame steel? also What is ERH? Man, I thought I knew more about Rugers. I've got a lot to learn.

Hi,

Tellico and Flatgate covered your questions regarding your shooter. Just get a little magnet, a refrigerator magnet will do. Touch it to the ejector rod housing (erh) there on the right hand side of the barrel, and on the grip frame. You'll see that it sticks because they are steel like the rest of the revolver frame.

As far as the photograph goes, your syntax looks right for the photo to display like it did in my post, don't know why it didn't. To make it a "clickable" link you would enter the url only. Like this:

Should have displayed the photo fine by starting like
like you did.

Yep. She is all steel. I will have to remember that the XR-3 means it is actually a XRN3-RED.

The real XR-3's have a straight backstrap, just like a Colt SAA.
Ruger's XR3-RED designs have a "flair" toward the butt, similar to their Super Blackhawk design.

Flare and not flair......

The dictionary defines flair as "smartness of style, manner" I think that pretty much describes a Ruger. So your English was fine.

As soon as I read your post, I had to scroll back up to see how I spelled it in my pic.

Funny thing...Back in high school all I had to do was look at those weekly vocabulary words once and the spelling was locked in my mind. Now I'm at that age where I sometimes have to stop and think while typing certain words. This getting old crap is for the birds.

But some people couldn't care less, we knew what you meant.

What an education! Thanks so much for your patience guys. I think I am getting closer to recognizing the differences.

You can't be wrong on this one! It is the only application where both words are correct or synonyms. Both of their definitions include:

"a shape that spreads outward".

The main difference that causes people to choose one over the other is that the XR3 also has 3/16" less space between the rear of the trigger guard and the front grip strap.

"Flair" relates to style and perhaps even grace.

"Flare" relates more to geometry.

In this case "flare" is the most directly applicable, but the result certainly has a degree of "flair".

Thanks for the informative artwork, Cary. Makes it clear.

;)
