SBH-base pin ass'bly question

while I was cleaning my 44 mag SBH I noticed the small pin fell out of the end of the base pin. According to the Ruger exploded view, there is supposed to be a small spring behind this pin and the both of them are captured in the end of the base pin.Everything seems to operate without it, what function does it do and should I replace it before I fire the gun? Thanks,

That little pin pushes the transfer bar back far enough to allow it to clear the firing pin when you pull the trigger. The gun will usually not work at all without it.

If you call Ruger I'll bet they will send you a new complete base pin, proably free if you explain the situation.

That little plunger is crimped in place. A call to Ruger service will have a new base pin assy. on it`s way for free. If you point the barrel down and try to cycle it it should hang up without this little spring loaded plunger in place.

Thanks for the reply, I had my wife call (I don't hear well) Ruger and the first story she got was they don't make the gun anymore and don't have the part but we could send the gun back to them to repair, it's a Bisley Super Black Hawk.Then she said we could buy an after market base pin assembly from Midway. So we called them and they don't have the part either. Called Ruger back, on hold for 15 minutes or so, got a different person who said we have the part and now it's on its way. The second person wanted the name of the first one we spoke with so she could be corrected. All's well that ends well, thanks for the advice.

Received my base pin assembly from Ruger today, 2 days earlier than they said. It is somewhat different but fits perfectly and the revolver cycles just fine. Thanks for the advice.
