Personally I think Zica is engineered panic utility reason for quarantine and Martial law, but the idiot who thought this was a good idea needs to get stung bad with no Epi pen

I don't believe spraying for mosquitos is an overreaction to the zika virus. I saw an microcephalic child that was 8 yrs old. No speech, smiling, very happy, unable to walk or feed himself, with irregular hours of sleep. When on the floor he rolls around and kicks his legs. What a life? Perhaps a bit more research should have been done before anhilating the bees. On the other hand I don't know of anyone lining up to adopt a microcephalic child.

Yellow fever and malaria were once quite common in parts of the US. Those diseases killed untold thousands. We defeated they by killing the vectors that carried them to humans. We did it by spraying and killing mosquitos.

We now have several other diseases that are carried by mosquitos. The ones getting the press right now are Avian flu, West Nile Virus and Zeka. If we do not kill the mosquitos that carry these diseases we will be right back to having thousands die.

To those that think we shouldn't spray, I suggest they go live in a country in which all of the diseases mentioned above are still rampant. Just make darned sure your life insurance is paid up.

Bees are extremely important, here in the NE bee populations are
in trouble. This spaying killing them is irresponsible, and foolish. Seems a
vaccine needs to be put on the fast track and to this insanity.

As far as Don's conspiracy thing we'll have to wait and see. Anything is
possible with this regime. ps

The only real issue as I understand it with the Zika virus is the birth defect problem... the solution at least temporally to this seems perfectly simple to me.... of course I solved that potential 'problem' 36 years ago when I was just 23 years old... "snip snip".

They are working on a vaccine as fast as they can with the funding the congress has given them. They also have genetically modified mosquitoes to release into certain areas to disrupt the breeding cycle of that one type of mosquito but that is meeting resistance from people living in that area.

quote> But outside the lab on Wednesday, demonstrators decried the notion of Keys Conchs being used as lab rats.

“We don’t have enough risk assessment. They have not answered questions properly. They’ve lied repeatedly to us and we can’t trust the company,” said Mara Daly of the Florida Keys Environmental Coalition.

Just this month the FDA green-lit a genetically-altered mosquito trial in a small Key West neighborhood. It was a political decision, critics say, amid the Zika scare. <end quote

Jeepnik, and others, It was not just in the U.S. that Malaria, Yellow Fever, etc., were nearly wiped out back a few decades ago. It was in the World. Remember that even in Africa the reported cases of Malaria, formerly in the millions, were down to only a few hundred after less than ten years.

Then came Rachel Carson. Her book, "Silent Spring", adopted by the Greenies as their Bible, influenced the politicians of the world to ban the control of mosquitoes. Just another example of putting Humans last. We know how to prevent many, even most of the insect vectored diseases. If we could get the Greenie arm of the Democrat party out of the way there would be progress.

The whole zika thing is being overblown. First of all, if you are not a sexually-active woman of childbearing age (or a man having unprotected sex with one -- lucky you!-- remember, it CAN be sexually transmitted) there's not much to be concerned with. Zika is a very mild disease and, in fact, most people who become infected with it never even know it. Once it has run its course, the virus is generally eliminated from the body in 2-3 weeks.

The most effective precautions are:
-- eliminate all sources of standing water around your residence; and,
-- use insect repellent when outdoors during peak mosquito activity periods. DEET is the scent of the season!

Of course, given the fact that most folks these days seem to see taking care of themselves as absolutely out of the question, I suppose nuking every living insect in the county makes a certain amount of sense...

There is a large agricultural area in China where the government decided to eliminate the insect population to increase production.... now the people in that area pollinate the plants by hand... no more bees or other flying insects to pollinate the crops...

Sounds like the Hillary Clinton jobs-creation program!

Like the attempts under Mao to eliminate sparrows and other small birds because they ate seeds and crops. Then it was found the sparrows ate the insects and other pests that were a much greater threat.

Right on Rancher Will !!
And over the years much of her claims made in the book have been found to be pure BS.

Should we mention the Moronic liberal whatever that "thought" it would be a good idea to scatter the seeds for the
Melaleuca (Austrailian) over the everglades from an aircraft to soak up the water and dry out the land. The invasive species has crowded out MUCH of the native vegetation and is difficult to destroy and stop.

Yeah, but...

Some moron introduced the honey bee, too, you know. It is not a native species, but was brought in from Europe.

YEAH, BUT HONEY BEES are helpful, the Melaleuca tree is a rapidly growing PEST; It was some dumb idiotic twit that "thought" (used loosely) that Water Hyacinths** were "beautiful" and dumped them into Florida rivers and lakes where they almost choked out all natural vegetation and were NOT good for the fish.

I kept my comments to the US because that is where the bee issue mentioned took place. Had it not been for spraying and killing mosquitoes the Panama Canal would never have been built.

And on a more personal note I may well have never been born. My dad was a Navy depended in the canal zone as a kid.

AAAAHHH; The wonders of DDT !!

I've wondered why the tropical countries haven't produced their own DDT. It would save a lot of lives and ended a lot of misery. My father got malaria during WWII in the Pacific. He had recurrences of malaria attacks to his dying day in 2004. If Carlson hadn't written that book the world might now be free of that terrible disease. I guess it's kinda like what happened after the movie "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" caused so many of the mental cases to end up living on our city streets.

Dad did get malaria while in the canal zone.

Flash forward to North Africa 1943. Dad reported to the medics with a malarial attack. They looked at him, and since he had never been stationed anywhere that malaria was common decided it wasn't possible.

He eventually got it through to them (pretty hard to be both coherent and patient in the throws of an attack) that he got it as a kid in Panama. Apparently Atabrine was to be found in theater so it had to be located and brought in.

Turned out the Brits kept in on hand as a matter of course regardless of the region. They had soldiers that had fought or served earlier all over the world and they had attacks from time to time.

I still like targeted eradication with genetically modified mosquitos. A similar sterile male process has been used for several different insects species to great advantage. If you combine that with controlled spraying good results should be possible.

BTW - Zika and Chik-V is spreading throughout the US.
