Wanted a good trainer bolt for my boy, and this Savage Mark II was highly recommended in rimfire forum, so for $170 I thought it would be good. Wild bragging about raggedy holes at 100 yards, and I thought id give this accutrigger a try for cheap. My problem is that the bolt handle seems to be grinding on the track it rides in, you know how its square coming off the bolt? Its lubed, is it just supposed to wear nicely after a while or what? Just wanna be able to put a ton of rounds through it, another reason for a bolt, reliable actions right? Whats happening? Normal? Bad design? I love to obsess on a new gun. I can add pics if you want, but it doesnt show much. Thank you for any advice

I don't like the look or feel of the new Savages myself. They look cheap to me. Don't much care for the accutrigger either. The only Savage I own was made in the 60's 8) Might wanna post this on a Savage forum to see if any of those guys can help you out.

Grinding? As in galling shiney metal? Or just extra tight?
Try this if you're handy: Take the bolt out, blacken the contacting surfaces with candle flame, sooting the offending areas. Reassemble and work the bolt a couple of times. Take out the bolt and lightly stone any burrs/high spots. Don't be a Dremel jockey, just a medium stone to any rough spots flatter.
Do this a couple times until you FEEL an improvement.
If the bolt body is hanging up, that's a different horse. BUt the Savage rimfires are great values on par with a Ruger, etc. They're not an Anschutz or Cooper, but then for a fraction of those prices you have a fine-accuracy rifle that'll connect the ear holes of a broadside squirrel at 50 yards.

I have a Mark II BV (the bull barrel), and there is actually about 1/32" play between the bolt handle and the slot in the receiver. No binding, no grinding.
And, it's a real tack driver.... at a 50 foot indoor range with Eley Match ammo, 5 shots leaves one hole, and you're hard-pressed to measure the hole at anything over .22 diameter. On a calm day, empty 12 gauge shells at 100 yards suffer about a 90% mortality rate with CCI Blazer ammo.
