I’m almost 70 years old and can’t remember ever buying CCI or other perceived “premium” ammo.

Remington Thunderbolt is universally hated in my house but other than that …… I seem to have been very lucky with guns reliably cycling 22 ammo; except that dreaded Thunderjunk.

It's funny how Golden bullets have gone from pretty good and reliable to no so much.

Back in the 80's they came loose in a milk carton. I shot a lot of them. May even have the target where I compared them to more expensive stuff.

I first noticed the change with the Golden in 2009, when people began seriously hording ammo. I have an .22LR conversion, Advantage Arms (AA), for Glock 19 & 26. The manufacturer specifically mentioned to use Rem Golden, and before the hording all worked well. I think QC was sacrificed for getting the product out. All manner of function problems in all my .22LR firearms, as I previously mentioned.

The very first thing to do is replace the Ruger Titanium firing pin with an all steel Volquartsen firing pin. Light weight firing pins are a very bad thing. You trade a tiny improvement in lock time for a huge increase in light strikes.

Thanks for that! As I mentioned my new 22/45 was misfiring every 40 rds or so. I bought the volquartsen bolt tune up kit and installed it, it included a firing pin and extractor. Went to the range this afternoon and shot about 200 rds w the same ammo, no misfires (y)

Reliability of the ammo itself is a big one for me also when it comes to self defense, but even if it was as reliable as a primer-fired round it's still a 22 which doesn't have near the energy, penetration, expansion, weight, etc, of most of the other popular self-defense rounds especially on someone who's wearing thick clothes or hopped up on drugs.

I don't doubt .22 LR AMMO is lethal, (shot placement) having lived in a part of the country where poaching deer was done with .22LR. Of course that's not a self defense situation. Agree Reliability is # (as in number) 1.

A picture of the pin strike on the cartridge may help.

I had sent the empty casings to CCI for inspection. They reported all strike indents were within tolerances. They sent a small check for a box of ammo.

The only good thing about the Remington Gold 'Bucket O' Bullets'...... is that you can still use the bucket after you throw that crap ammo away....

Recap and update… I got a 22/45 a couple months ago and was getting a misfire w Rem golden ammo every 40-50 rds so installed a volquartsen bolt tune up kit (firing pin and extractor) and since don't recall a misfire in over 500 rds. Been testing different brands just to see what works best in my gun. Other ammo that runs great is both cci standard velo and mini mag, have shot over 200 rds w each w no misfires. Cci is probably what I'm going to stick w going forward.

On the other hand a particular ammo that once I'm done w the box I won't be buying more is Herter's target, it's simply terrible in my gun, misfires (whether that be no ignition or no cycling/ejection) about 1 in every 10. Herter's pistol centerfire works fine, shot a fair amount of it and never had an issue but their rimfire is another story. Just wanted to throw that out there, ymmv.
