Ruger Super Problem

I bought a Super yesterday and have a problem. When I removed the cylinder pin, a small coil spring came out of the back of cylinder. Can this be fixed or should I just throw it away. Serial #81-xxxx. Also has the high polish blue in about 99%. Any help would be appreciated.

Vince, being that is a "new model" most likel;y the small spring is from the rear ( back end) of the center pin,,,there is a small plunger that is spring loaded ,,,,this is needed for the plunger to keep pressure on the transfer bar to clear the rear of the firing pin or it will hang up, you'd then have to point the gun towards the sky , to allow the transfer bar to "clear" the firing pin...not good.....you'd get one from the factory, tell them yours 'broke'............

You always have the answer. The spring is bent. Do I need the plunger and the spring? The transfer bar does not look like it is in the right position. Can I install it?

Also, got a 3 screw .45, 4 5/8" Bkh. My first one!

I had a single six that that happened to. I called up Ruger and told them that the base pin broke ( came apart ) and they wanted to charge me for a replacement pin. I picked one up off the classified here,

The plunger is probably still in the gun. Do you hear anything when you shake the gun? Cock the hammer, turn it upside down and shake it. It be down in the grips.

If you find it, assemble the spring and the plunger with the small tit pointing outward and re-peen the edges of the cylinder rod in four places around the circumference with a hammer and punch.
It's a simple process and you can't hurt anything.

The gun will function with just the spring temporarily; you might have to stretch it a bit.

Thanks, guys for all the help. Now another problem. I ordered a new base pin. It fits, but it's not like the old one. It (the old one) had a collar on the pin in front of the frame. The new one doesn't. Could it be that this gun is a transitional model and used some old model parts or has someone changed the pin. Any new help would be appreciated.

Dan, you said to peen the old one, but I ruined the spring when I pulled the cylinder out. Any idea where to get new one? What size?

you can use the spring from under the flint of a BIC type lighter. Trim to length so that your plunger can depress.

The new Base Pins doesn't have the collar..............................

I am sure that I have a few extra base pins laying around Vince. PM your address and I'll mail one to you. It will be collared like the original one.

Ruger is usually pretty good about fixing or replacing stuff. My front sight came off of my 25 year old Super and I sent it back and they replaced the sight, the dented ejector rod housing and completely reblued it and shipped it back for free. One of the reasons I buy Ruger.

Call again, get it for free. If they say no, PM me and I will take care of it. No need for a new gun to need purchased parts..................

I will try to fix the one I have. If not successful, I may take tek2460 up on his offer. This gun is new to me, but I think it was made back in the early 70's. It has the real shiny blue and is pre warning.

I don't post very often (only when I have a problem), but I think this forum has some of the greatest members of any I read.
