Just curious because I have heard different things.

If I send a pistol back to Ruger to re-blue the slide, will they also re etch the logo's, model #, etc, etc....
on the slide ?

Just wondering if this is normal practice or not, during the re-blue process Ruger has in place.

Thanks in advance

Good question, as all the ones we've ever seen that other folks have returned for refinishing, they worked around the rollmarks, and ONE gun , P series they replaced the slide for the guy...............I know when we redid any firearm, we worked around any and all the markings (rollmarks),,,very seldom did we have to remove them completely because the pitting was so bad, and if the serial numbers were BADLY pitted or hard to see , we had to get persmission from BATF to redo the the numbers or replace them with a series of numbers that they assign.
we used to get a lot of guns that were damaged in floods, fires, stolen recovered from the bottom of the grand River and so on, as well as some department guns well worn from "use".....now days they just trade them in.

Dan,

Thank you for your response. Reason being is I sent my P95PR15 in for a reblue, and when it came back I had more questions than answers. Here is a copy of the leter I wrote when I sent it back the 2nd time, because I viewed pictures previously and the logo positioning does not match the current positioning. Customer service said no they do not do this, and my friends said no they did not do this, but when the tech called me, he said they do and CS was wrong. Wondering if it really is my original slide. Hell, they even etched my serial number underneath. Here is the letter I sent when I sent it back the 2nd time. I was not happy with what was returned to me.

1. Once the gun was returned to me re-blued, it stated they replaced the slide stop assy and the left safety. Why? The 2 new pieces were all scratched up. Why re-blue a gun then replace two items that from my knowledge did not need to be replaced, and if they did why replace them with 2 pcs that looked “used”. Since receiving the gun I cleaned both up really well, as well as used a dremel tool to buff them. They look much, much better. Although the finish on these looks dull, and still can see scuffing/scratches, and look different than the right safety and the slide.

2. I had questioned if the front sight was replaced. The left side of the front side was all rusted where the 2 little notch holes are. I cleaned these up too. Also on the right side of the front sight, there is a scratch on the site that moves down the slide. This was not there previously.

3. I had noticed the new left safety / decocker had some “play” in it. I asked if this was normal. I am fine with this if it is normal, but my previous safety, was solid & tight “on” in the white position, and was tight up in the “fire” red position. I liked this especially having children in the house. But now there is some play. Is this ok? Is this normal?

4. The play in the left safety seems to cause this next issue/observation. When safety is off, the firing pin seems to be crooked in its place. Just slightly crooked, although still vertical. However when I squeeze both sides, both safety’s this seems to but the ends up against the pin making it straight. Is this ok? Is this normal?

5. Upon inspection of the firing pin, I noticed the hammer was crooked. It seems to have been shaved at the top as well as overall tooling crooked on top. I cannot confirm my hammer was like this before or not. I however do remember this being like that as I would have called Ruger and asked if I saw this, so I either never noticed this or this is not my hammer. Is this ok? Is this normal?

6. After all this I decided to take the gun apart, so I broke it down to do a thorough cleaning and inspection of the inside. Upon cleaning the inside of my slide, I noticed my serial number “xxxxx” hand etched underneath on the bottom of my slide. I know this was not there before. It was just an observation and I figured this was normal to avoid mixing up customer’s slides. I have read that the serial number only appears on the frame and after speaking with CS they stated this was not common practice. This does not bother me that it is there, however due to above issues I stated I decided to research some old photographs because I had a feeling this just was not my slide.

7. I have attached photos to an e-mail as well as printed them out here for your observation. Perhaps you can tell me if this is or is not my original slide? Here are some pictures of when I first purchased the gun, and it seems the etchings of RUGER P95 as well as the logo on the right side is in different locations. I asked and was told if a slide is re-blued are the etchings re-etched, and was told no. I was also told that every frame is “married” to a particular slide, and this was my main concern. I do not care that if it is a new slide or not, as long as it is ok that it can be, but also my issue was these parts that were replaced looked used, so maybe the parts were already on this other slide? Again please view the pictures. The P95 seems to be etched above the right of the opening. Where my original slide as you can see in the pictures, the P95 seems to be etched above the opening. On the right side, the Ruger logo seems to be etched farther left of the slide stop pin. Where my original slide you can see in the pictures seems to be etched centered to the left of the pin. Also on the right hand side, there was a dot / divot that was etched after the “R” ending in RUGER. This is not present on the new slide. You can see it if you are zoomed on the JPEGS I e-mailed. All photos I sent are easier to view to compare.
So my question is….is this my original slide? I have had people look at this, and all had the same conclusion as me. I do not think it is.
Again I had read all slides are married and are factory specific to their frames, if this is true do I need my original slide?

Bottom line.
I didn't think it was my slide, and if what you are stating is true, as well as my friends......it is not my slide. I would love to post some before and after pics, but not sure how to do it.

if they replaced the slide you would not get the old one back, and as you noticed it is "obviously different" so would be my bet ........ the slide and frame are not from one piece, but "fitted" ( married??) to each other, to within certain specs, it is too costly to do a "precision" or "match" set up, no play etc, thats for the "custom boys" and comes under "match work"...............AND any and all fitting takes in all the pieces ,parts that come together, so they would shave here or file there to make them "fit".....if you are NOT happty, by all means, complain..........

Dan,

I believe the slide is not mine, and Customer service as well as my friends stated that they do NOT re-etch the logo's. However the tech who called me sounded a little smug, and said they were wrong and it is polished and re-etched. from what everyone is saying, this is not the case. I just want to undertsand rugers process, then I will know if the slide is mine.

OK...so if the slide is not mine, I had read every slide it fitted to it's frame, thus "married" Is this not correct? If not, then basically any slide can work with precision and work fine on any frame?

i do not care one way or another, but just want to understand what happened and what issues may arrive or not, from what happened. Could not get straight answers from Rugers CS, and maybe the tech was just saying this to cover his butt, because the etching are in fact.....in a different location.

I really do not know if there is anything to complain about I guess.....lol, other than replacing these parts that did not need to be replaced, with used ones.. He said they are all in bags together and he agreed there was some imperfections on it. He told me everything else I listed above was normal.

Dan, I appreciate you commenting and giving me advise, and as a new gun enthusiast, over 1 year, what do you think I should do? It is not a 1,000 dollar gun, it is an inexpensive gun, so I am not going nuts over it, but I do use it for Concealed Carry

the value of what it cost should not be a factor, a finished product is a finished product, and as such you are entitled to one of quality and in performance, so if you are NOT happy, as you stated above, by all means let them know this and that all you want is YOUR gun to work and LOOK "right"...now you must accept the fact that as to where and how "marking" ,logos, or as you are calling them "etchings"?? the newer stuff may not have them in the same location, they will use up 'old stock' and then when others are made, ordered or put in stock, they may NOT match , same goes for the finish, there can and will be a "difference" in polish, finish (color)...
Good luck

there was a difference in finish, but still not sure why they replaced slide stop and left safety, mine was fine. Which is why i was thinking not my slide, possibly?

I have no problem with new slide. Just want to know if it IS a new slide, and can't get a straight answer, since Ruger CS says no they dont re etch, and tech said yes, friends say no, etc, etc...lol

Appreciate the info Dan.

again, goes back to the change of slides and the refitting of any and ALL parts related to the final fit & function, the old parts were poossiblt NOT fitting the new slide properly, loose??? tight?? whatever, it is easier to reach into the parts bin and put in a "new" one that comes the closest to "fitting" with out having to "fit "it, if you catch my drift.............and no the tech, or the CS person willNOT know what each is has or is saying atr any given time to make the customer "happy"...as grandpa used to say .." if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with &ull$#it...."

lol, I like Grandpa's saying. good one. I will wait until I get it back to see how it looks and functions. I just wanted all my original parts, because I know what i had and how it functioned and as I stated in the letter things look diff, and fit loosely now, and couldn't get a straight answer if that was normal or not, and also why the items were changed if I was only getting a re-blue. Reason being is prob like you said....they chaged them because it is a new slide, but why tell me it is not a new slide. I will def never be sending any of my other guns back to Ruger, I feel let down as a customer and stock investor. Hopefully when it comes back it looks right and feels right and functions right.

don't get down on them, big operation and many times the right hand does NOT know what the left hand is doing......having dealt with their techs and CS folks as well as their upper management over periods of time, and only a very FEW "issues", I can see and I understand the whys and the wherefores....having spent time at OTHER gun factories and doing warranty work for them, I understand even MORE and can see how things get lost in the translation, they do the best they can with what they have to work with.....CS folks like to smooth over the customer, maybe as grandpa noted, is this right? no Sir, but they try...give them a chance and hopefully things will work out, may be NEVER know just why or what, but the finished product should be as YOU would like it to be........parts, procedures, workers change, and it does NOT look like it today from how and what they had to do and go through in the years gone by....Ruger is making LOTS and LOTS of guns, and sadly they do NOT keep stock ( inventory) on every make ,model they have built over the years, some of them are GONE forever, and the people owning these are just "$#it out of luck" when it comes to having their guns reworked or rebuilt, will come time to "retire" them and put them out to pasture...........

well put Dan, thank you.

On another note, another issue arose. I told them in the note, as well as when I spoke to the tech, as well as in an a-mail to customer service.
"Call me before it ships." I figured if it was coming back after the holiday weekend i would need them to ship to a diff address

well they did not and no one will be home to sign for the damn gun......lol wonderful. I expressed my displeasure in an e-mail to CS. I still will prob buy their guns, and invest but damn.......I will never send one back, I rather get a local gunsmith for any issues I cant fix myself.
