I inherited a 22 Caliber Revolver from my father-in-law. It is loaded with 22 mag shells. There is nothing on the box or on the pistol that indicates that this pistol is chambered for the mag shells. How can this be confirmed?
The serial number starts with a 60-29***.
 
Welcome to the Forum!

Your gun was shipped as a convertible,, with (2) cylinders. It's obviously got the .22 mag in it. If you didn't get a second cylinder with it,, it may be lost,, or sold, or heck,, even stolen at some point.

And as noted above,, you can't put .22 magnum rounds in a cylinder cut for .22 LR.

The box,, nor the gun will have markings to show you what it was other than the SC6.

You can verify how it was shipped, when it was made, when it shipped & where it went with a simple letter request from Ruger. For $10,, you get a factory letter with that info. And SC6 stands for the Super Single-Six Convertible. And with the serial number provided,, it was made sometime in 1970.
 
Thanks for the info. I would assume the original LR cylinder is lost. I may try to find another. In the meantime, can I load and fire LR shells in the Mag cylinder?

Will they fire? Yes. Is it recommended? No. As noted,, it'll split the brass cases,, and might jam a bit.

Look for an OM cylinder,, with the same OAL,, or maybe a few thousands longer in .22 LR. If it's a little long,, you can hone/file the front boss section of the cylinder to fit properly. Too short,, and you'll have "end shake."

Once you have a minimum of (10) posts here,, and I think been a member for a little bit,, you can use the "Classifieds" to place a WTB ad.
 
yes measure the cylinder that is now in the gun and its overall length, as I will show below in a picture, and let us know,,,there was a couple at the show this past weekend a guy has and one of them is an old model 22 cal ( LR) cylinder, has the firing pin grovve in the rear and its from an old model has the red bag and its like new, he offered it to me for $150 as he was told at one time to return it to the factory and get a "new" one and I doubt it will be an old model version, and they wanted $168?? not sure, as I no longer have dealt with them since we retired and closed the shop, but I know if you was to send it back, it has to be 'safety updated' as well or they will not do it.........

the pictured cylinder is NOT the one that he has, this is a "file" picture from years ago...

The .22 WMR case is cylindrical, not tapered but is larger in diameter (.242 vs. .226):
