Ruger GP-100 Wolf Trigger Spring Install

Hello,

I have purchased a Wolf Trigger return spring (8lb) and Hammer spring (10lb) for the GP-100.

I will start my installation in a few minutes.

Never been inside a GP-100 before but I have been watching some good video's.

Looks straight forward.

I know my way around S&W's but have never attempted the Ruger.

Any advice on things I should look out for or tips on methods to deal with that Hammer spring?

I wouldn't be in a rush to change the return spring. It does little for trigger pull and I value a quick reset. I put a 10# hammer spring in mine and it is GTG.

My 5 inch bbl GP100 accepted the 8lb spring and trigger return was smooth and reliable. However, by 3 inch GP trigger didn't return consistently with the 8lb spring, so I went to the 10 pounder on it. You will have to give it a try and see. The reduced weight hammer spring makes a big difference, IMO.

Check out the 'Ruger popper' tool for opening the trigger guard latch. (Don't take the trigger assembly apart.)
The springs are easy to change. Sometimes the trigger guard latch can be hard to re-seat. A little lube on the latch plus a whack with a rubber mallet will usually work. Sometimes, as with mine, a little filing on the latch, not the frame, helped a great deal. After changing springs check the operation, first by dry firing, then with different cartridges. Some primers are harder than others. Federal primers are light and CCI primers are hard, the others are medium. You definitely don't want a self-defense gun that misfires.

Well, I got it done and it went smooth. I think that the Ruger popper would be nice. I will get an email off and see if I can get one. It is not hard to use a narrow punch but I think that the tool is the key to making it that much easier.

Now, I would just like to say that I was impressed with the engineering that Ruger put into the GP-100. Wow, I think that this is a simple yet rugged gun that should last for years.

The spring kit dropped right in with not problems. The single action and double action pull seems improved. I will spend some time dry firing and tomorrow I will take it out for a test drive.

I installed the Wolff 8-pound trigger return spring and 12-pound hammer spring in my 6" GP. That and a little smoothing of the action lightened both the DA and SA trigger pull noticeably and it remains 100% reliable. I've heard varying reliability reports about the 10-pound hammer spring and didn't go that low.

The second one covers the SP-101 but the GP is pretty much just a scaled up SP so the procedures are the same.

Thanks for posting that link. I skimmed through it fast but I see that I will have to spend some time and read the material carefully. It is a wealth of information that is well presented. I hope to test fire my GP-100 today and see what type of performance it will provide. It is simple enough to swap out springs until I find the perfect match. Mainly shooting reloads and I am using CCI magnum primers. I have heard that they are hard.
