Excerpts: Ruger's new lead-free ammunition will be produced under a licensing agreement with Savannah, Georgia-based PolyCase Ammunition.

Ruger has chosen a lead-free copper alloy/nylon binder bullet technology versus the more traditional lead-based projectiles.

Non lead, being "different" isn't necessarily a bad thing. With lead production being what is it, having the foresight to look ahead is a good thing. Not going to discount it until it's proven good or bad. Simply being different doesn't mean "bad".

It will be more expensive than lead and won't perform as well, especially for barrier penetration. Turns to powder on impact with hard objects .............. like bone :roll: . Probably other issues as well, that aren't being revealed. I won't be buying any.

I guess my main questions are:
1) How much production?
2) WHEN?

We need to find out where all the ammunition being produced is going.
The speculation of it all being gobbled up by hoarders and new shooters
has worn thin.

Does anyone else remember the CCI video on how they produce .22lr?
The statement in that video was that they produced seven million
rounds PER DAY, seven days per week. And that was six years ago, from
that one manufacturer. Dig out your calculator. That's over 15 TRILLION
rounds, just while the Head Narcissist In Charge (HNIC) has been in the
White House. And only from ONE of the how many manufacturers?

Polycase has a dealer finder on their website. Lot's of gunshops stock it, even near me. Ruger is just a new distributor for them. Runs about $1/shot for 9mm. Basically novelty ammo, imho.

Pretty much the same thoughts here!

20+ years ago the greenies convinced the powers that be lead should be outlawed for shooting waterfowl. With the exception of a couple of exotic and spendy products, non-lead substitutes have been far less dense per unit of volume. We've had to go to larger shot to get the same pellet weight of the smaller lead it replaced, which makes patterns less dense, leading to more cripples as far as I've been able to see. Mfrs have tried to up the velocities (to the point today's waterfowl loads are often downright painful at the shooter's end), and it's still not solved the problem at the ducks' end. I haven't seen any yet, but have seen a couple of field tests where lead-free 22s were tested on small game, and it seems they are problematic in this department, too. At least so far?

I see a corrollary in self-defense ammo, especially when shot in .380/9mm variants. Bounce a couple of those apparently frangible 74 gr bullets from your 9mm off a drugged up BG in a heavy jacket and you might find yourself rethinking the situation: would it be nice to have a slower 147 gr lead bullet about now?

Time will tell.

Bad thing is when they think they found a alternative they will try to ban lead like in California that's my suspicion.

Looks like another marketing strategy first they try to tell people they have to have the over priced designer magic expanding bullets, now their saying this magic bullet don't need to expand, can't make up their minds :roll:

I'll just stick to my good old fashion jacketed lead bullets they always do the jobs, no need to fix what's not broken.

Very "light weight" stuff. Only the 9MM is +P... though it looks like +P is the only option coming out in 9mm, and the 40SW has a flat head to it. Anyway, if you haven't seen Ruger's add for it:

It appears that instead of fragmenting or increasing diameter on impact, it spins with cut grooves like one of those chariot wheels from the old Bible movies. Is the idea that now this round will not only penetrate into/through a target, but that this round will utilize the spinning motion to inflict more cutting damage or something like that?

Also, I was surprised to see Ruger putting their name on a round. thoughts on that? I really am interested in this but need some more feedback.

Hi,

As crass as this will sound, it will take some actual BGs getting shot to really determine how well this idea works. Until then, it looks like an expensive way to shoot blocks of gelatin, which don't fight back.

I hope the company making this ammo has other plans besides hooking its wagon to the Ruger star: watch how quickly Ruger drops its own products from their catalog in response to the bean counters' dictates. If this ammo works, that's good for both Ruger and the mfr. If it doesn't, the question around the ammo company's shipping dock may well be "Ruger who?"

As I mentioned before, time will tell...
