I just thought is was kinda neat having both the fixed and adjustable site Security Six's.
A lady at Ruger told me that guns returned to them from gun writers or others who got to "sample" them were frequently stamped with the "S". Neither of these were recorded other than "returned, checked for function, stamped "S" and sold.

I know it's a needle in a haystack, but...
In 1974, I bought a Fixed Sight Security Six. I sold it to a friend some years later, and it was subsequently stolen. When he reported it, he did not know the s/n, so there was no further follow up by the police.
If this revolver ended up in somebody's collection, I'd sure like to buy it.

Mine is 605 numbers later than yours. So, you can scratch this one off your list of possibilities. But it was close enough I had to double check.
On another note, the lady at Ruger reminded me the “S” is NOT in any way a part of the serial number. It is simply a factory designation stamped near the serial number. However, I think the “D” is an entirely different story.

All the evidence I have seen point to the fact that they were made for the RCMP.
Now I could be wrong, But your going to have to prove it to me! I believe this was discussed years ago here on the forum.
Its ok to have a theory but that's not proof.

"Made for testing or trials" and "made for or produced for" are not mutually exclusive terms. The batch was, in fact, delivered to the RCMP and not returned to Ruger. It's my understanding that they did not become RCMP general issue. The Mounties are a large force (currently 19,000 officers). S&W retained the contract. There is some confusion (at least in my mind) on the total number produced - 150 - minus 15 or 150 plus 15. In any case, it's a very small number of which only a few were sold in the States. "Rare" by most definitions.TT,

With 19,000 officers and a small batch of 150 guns, the numbers alone suggest a "sample" or "test" buy. These were not unique compared to the S&W 5" .38 Spl. that the Mounties. used therefore I don't think they would have been "special issue", say, to an elite squad.
Some might have made it out to the street but the sample is SO small as to not really be a "standard" issue firearm.

That Smith looks like some the IL State Police were issued decades ago …. I’m not a big Smith guy but think it was in the 50s or 60s. I think those were 5 inch barrel also. Maybe somebody with more info will chime in.
Speaking of "lost LE contracts": Here's a Ruger CHP along side the S&W model that it failed to replace together with the 50 year CHP commerative, a S&W model 19. A Ruger FFL (dealer) won the CHP contract and had the guns produced only to have the CHP go to court to overturn the low bid and stay with S&W for "compatablity" issues. Both guns were 6" stainless, .38 Spl. with big grips.

Flatbush, they're out there but more than a bit elusive. The short barreled square butt fixed sight is the least common of the square butt, fixed sight sixes. It seems that when folks wanted the short barrel, they also wanted the round butt.

It does not appear to be that old. more like mid 80's. It does not have a pinned barrel and the front slight is slant cut. Both signs of a newer model. (IMHO)
