Ruger Blackhawks .357/9mm

Hi all I just pick one up over in the classified section, please give me a idea of what great fun I am in for. What is a good 9mm round to shoot, I have heard many different things. Two new Rugers for me in a month, I think I've been bitten by the ruger bug.

Well, mines a .45 Colt/ .45 ACP but I really like having the acp cylinder for plinking mainly. I load em up with a 200 gr. RNFP Lead bullet and 5 gr. Unique for a really nice accurate plinker. I'm sure the 9mm/.357 will be similar. Use the 9mm for plinking ammo and hunt/defend with the .357. Makes it nice to get a combination. Remember the 9mm factory ammo is about 1.5 thousandths smaller and some have had issues getting factory LEAD ammo to shoot decently, but jacketed is usually decent. If you reload your own, you can use lighter bullets sized to fit the larger bore and avoid this issue, just don't shoot them in a 9mm semi auto or they will likely jam.

The convertible Blackhawks like this are great guns. You'll have fun just finding the right ammo for it. Best thing to do is just get out & enjoy it!

For 9mm in mine I have been loading .356'' copper-plated Rainier Ballistics bullets over TiteGroup for roughly 1100 FPS and they seem accurate enough for the plinking we do which is out to about 75 yards.
I suppose most factory "ball" ammunition would fall neatly into those specs.
You did well on this purchase, and you will have fun shooting 9mm in your Blackhawk - it takes the fight right out of 'em!, but for serious accuracy a 38/357 with the appropriately sized bullet is my first choice. Either way, you really can't not have fun with it!

for the 9mm cylinder in my convertible I load a .358 105 swc bullet over 3.8 gr of pb .it shoots pretty good at 25 yrds bench rested . as for factory ammo I couldn't tell you mine has never seen any .

So far I've shot several different 9mm's through mine with no problems at all. That includes PMC, Blazer, Am Eagle and several others in the FMJ bracket. I've also fired off several Hornady hollow points and all work just fine. You will love the gun and the more you use it the better it gets.

I also recently picked up a Blackhawk 357/9mm. I've only been to the range twice with it ran both WWB and Federal 115br fmj through it. I haven't been able to find any 357 or 38sp to try yet. My only issue is with the front sight. old eyes and a not very well lit range make it really difficult to see it. I tried some fluorescent yellow paint but that was a bust. Question! Can some type of fiber optic sight be mounted ? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Joe

The only 9mm that worked well in my convertible was FMJ with the open base. Apparently, it "bumped up" easily to fill the bore making it acceptably accurate.

My convertible BH .357/9mm shoots .357 best no matter the load.
NOW, My .45 Colt/.45 ACP BH convertible shoots ACP best no matter what the load.
I also have a pair of Vaqueros .45 Colt/ACP that shoot both equally well. I also own a pair of FT .45 Convertibles that shoot both great.
You just have to try em and see. Have fun!!

My old model with 4.375 in. barrel shoots 9 mm real well and the cylinder also works well in my 6.5 in. revolver. Both shoot the 9mm as accurate as 38 spl. but i almost never bother with the 9 mm, it is just as economical to shoot 38 spl. and .357 in them and that is one less sight adjustment that i have to allow for. For me the 9 mm cylinder is just a nice novelty to have in my collection, and it is really hard to beat the cost of 148 gr. WC and 158 gr. SWC bullets. All the Blackhawks are great guns, no matter what you choose to shoot in them.

My friend WAYNO has had the convertible for some time and has proven to be very accurate with most all 9mm ammo he fed it.

It was such a good shooter that I convinced myself to get one. So, one came up for sale in the classifieds and I bought it.

Yesterday, I took it to the range and it was every bit as accurate as WAYNO's. I was using cheap Federal 115gr range ammo.

I highly recommend this neat little convertible!

I have never had the 357/9, so I cannot speak to them. However, I do have a Williams Shooters Supply 45colt/45acp that I am not impressed with at all. I am actually thinking of selling the acp cylinder because I never intend to use it again. The problem that I have had with it since new is that regardless of brand of brass, it will bind up on EVERY single cylinder of 45acp ammo. Matter of fact, it does it with factory ammo.

The dimensions on the acp cylinder are obviously wrong and I am sure that Ruger would fix it if returned, but screw it...I don't really need the acp anyway. If I want to shoot acp...that is why I have the 1911's.

At any rate, my only experience with the convertible has been miserable, so I would not recommend one.

Sorry for your bad experience with the 45acp/45colt convertible. Mine functions and shoots great, no issues.

I own one and love it. I hardly ever use the 357 cylinder. For range fun the jacked 9mm 115 gr is great. Its accurate to 15 yds which is good enough for me.
