Ruger American Rimfire Target

Hello everyone,

This is my first post to this forum and I am confident I will get answers to my questions here.

Recently I purchased a new Ruger American Rimfire Target in .17 HMR with a laminated wood stock. I have been to the range twice and it shoots very well. Here are my questions. When I read the marketing stuff about this model there was mention of bedding blocks and the barrel is floated. I haven't had the gun apart yet but my barrel is definitely not free. It fails the dollar bill test. I think it will be an easy thing to remedy by removing the barrel/action from the stock and removing some material from the stock with a dowel and sandpaper.

1. Does this sound reasonable? If not, what are other suggestions?
2. Does Ruger publish torque settings for the action screws?
3. What type of finish if any is on this type of stock? It's my first laminated stock.

Here's my question: If it ain't broke, why try to fix it?

First I would remove the barrelled action from the stock and reinstall it, torqing the screws at factory specs, then see if the barrel is free. If not free I would do as you suggest with dowel and sandpaper. David

I agree with Hunter. If it works, just shoot it. I have rarely made any changes to firearms I have purchased. I just learned to shoot them; triggers, grips and such.
