ruger 77/50

got lucky and bought a 77/50 rs at a local auction, in the box but nothing else. is unfired and a three digit gun. I am now looking for a breech plug wrench......anybody know where I can acquire one(tried all the usual places, all sold-out) or get the drawing so I can fabricate one?

I had the same issue with the one I bought a few years back. I found one with a wtb ad in the classifieds here. If you cant find one , I could take measurements and pictures for you to go off of if you end up having to make one.

I didn't have a tool at first when I got mine. I took my angle grinder to a deep well socket to make one. It worked for a few years. I eventually found one on either Gunbroker or Ebay.
Those 77/50's are great little deer guns . Enjoy

I have this, I bought some from Ruger several years ago. This is what they sent, wrench and breech plug but not the handle. The handle is just a simple rod. Let me know if you are interested. $20 shipped Priority Mail.

Never heard of one of these before today. A quick Google search found that this is a muzzle loader, looking at the images, the stainless/laminated model is gorgeous.

There were 3 versions. The stainless laminate , a walnut called the officers model , and the standard birch stocked model.

From what Ive seen over the years the prices are all over the place and you can find a nice one for a decent price if you have patience and the cash available when a deal pops up. I was wanting one and finally at a Tulsa show about 4 years ago someone was walking around with one. Stainless laminated , unfired , and wearing a new silver Leupold VXII 3-9 scope. I got it for under $500 so I was pretty happy about that!

One of these days I need to take it out and shoot the darn thing!

Yes that is a nice set! I have an unfired ss/lam that im hoping to finally break in this coming season.

For those in the know...

I picked up an extra wrench and breech plug (thanks again Ruger168!) and the factory envelope was labeled "musket breech plug". What primers does that use? And does anyone know what different types of plugs Ruger offered and how to tell them apart?

I did a little reading and think I answered my own question. The 77/50 came with a percussion cap breech plug and Ruger offered a plug for musket caps. The musket cap plug has a nipple on it roughly twice the size of the percussion cap. One thing I stumbled upon was this blog from years back. Seems to have some helpful info there for us that are blackpowder illiterate!

Another question for the BP shooters here is which cap is a better choice...percussion or musket? And why?

Good morning. I have an officers model with factory breech plug for no. 11 caps. I read a lot about ignition problems. What I found was that ignition problems were only happening when BP substitutes were used. I never use BP substitutes. I use FFFG Swiss and a magnum #11 cap and have never had any ignition problem. Some will say that they use substitute BP because the rifle is easier to clean after firing. Not true! I have tried them and find cleaning after use more difficult.

Just a BIG THANK YOU! to ruger168 for the wrench accessory set. this completes the m77/50 I got at an auction....I like the photo of the complete set of variations. too bad Ruger discontinued them, especially since Remington just brought out a new version of the 700 ML.

Glad I could help with the wrench sets for my fellow Ruger Forum folks. Always a pleasure to help like minded people ! It is a shame they stopped making them, I think they are great rifles and the ones I shot were very accurate.
