ruger 77/44 scope question

Hi Guys,
Heres the question.. I have one of the 77/44 and need to scope it badly, however most scopes I've tried look out of place ( too big/ long ) for the action..
So what would be a nice "compact" scope for these rifles ?
something in a 3x9 would be nice or a fixed power no more than 4x ?
and something thats not going to brake the bank..

I got a 2x7 Bushnell Elite 3200 on mine fits great and looks nice. They upgraded the glass and the price and now label them as just elites. The Elite 3200 was one the brightest scopes I have ever used. If they did truly upgrade the glass they turned a great scope into a phenomenal scope.

Another option is the Redfield. No experience with them but have heard great things. Size wise it is nearly identical to the bushnell.

Burris also makes a 2x7. Very nice scope have a couple older ones. But I have had too many bad experiences with recent production burris to recommend them.

As for fixed power not much of a fan. Always seems to be too mush of a compromise. Unless you don't like open sights and go with a low power fixed like 2x most fixed power seem to be too much magnification for close in and not enough for far out.

The Burris Timberline 4X is an excellent, economical and very compact scope and an excellent fit on the 77/44. I've put them on my 96 and a few short barreled Marlin 1894s. Lots of eye relief. If you get a refurbished one from Natchez they're only about $80.00, about half off regular price.

Typically that kind of gun and cartridge is used at 100 yards or less and so I would prefer the lower power scopes for this situation. Weaver has a classic v series, 9 inch long, 1 - 3x with a 20 mm lens for 169 $. Bushnell shows a legend ultra, 1.75 - 5x, 30 mm objective lens, for 169$. It is 10.25 inches long. I would just go to midway.com and browse. Lots of choices and a fun kind of shopping.

However, in the end, it is simply a matter of your own personal preference. If you want to mount a 6 - 20x, then go for it.

I mounted a Leupold VX-2 1-4 on my 77/44. Seemed like the perfect scope for woods deer hunting here in
Indiana. Keep it set on 1X, actually about 1.3, for lots of eye relief and field of view. If a longer shot
is offered the power can be turned up quickly. A bargain would seem to be the same scope in Leupold's
VX-1 shotgun line. Lower priced than the VX-2s and with the heavy duplex and built to the same
standards of durability as all of their scope lines. It also looks good on the compact rifle.
