I have a Ruger 77 flat bolt, tang safety in 250 Savage that I bought used a number of years ago. Serial #70-992xx. Just curious as to when it was made. Also I think the rifling twist is 1-14, but I'd like to confirm that.

Thanks, D

If I'm reading the table correctly, your 77, .250 savage was made in 1974. You can double check me by going to the ruger website and clicking on Customer Service. Next click on product history, and then rifle product history, which will give you tables of years versus serial numbers.

I THINK (not sure) that ruger used a 1 in 10 twist in all its .250 savage chamberings. Matter of fact, according to the references I can find, the 1 in 10 twist was used by ruger in all its .25 caliber chamberings in all model rifles. My 77 RSI, .250 savage, manufactured in 1987, has a 1 in 10 twist. I was curious, and so I just now measured it. Good to know, although I've never used anything heavier than a 100 grain bullet in it.

Thank you for the information. The 10 inch twist is even better. Somewhere I read that the Rugers used a 14 in twist and wouldn't shoot the lighter weight bullets accurately. I've never tried anything lighter than 100 gr in mine either. I have loaded a few 117s and 120s for it. They shot just fine with about the same accuracy. I have some cast bullets coming and want to try them for some plinking loads.

dont believe ruger ever used 1-14 barrels on a 250. At least ive never seen one. Savage used them on the 99s and my winchester light weight carbine in 240 is 1-14 but all the rugers ive seen are 1-10
