Watched an old episode of Roy Rogers today and saw something I don't remember. I sure don't remember that double crease in his hat like that. I don't think I've ever seen any kind of hat with a crown like that.

Have any of you seen or remember a hat like that?

Yes, remember it well. Think there was a video of Roy showing his son how to crease it like that.

Why did I "know" that Bob would have the answer to this one?

Thanks for the video Bob. I never would have imagined that he did his own hat like that.

I worked with another guard who was a friend and neighbor of Roy. Roy gave him a colt of Trigger. He car pooled with another guard and he told me that ---- let the colt run around inside his house!

By the way, "The Lone Ranger" was on right after Roy. Did you ever notice that in the opening when he's galloping on Silver and he fires those two shots right over Silver's head that the horse doesn't even blink?

I guess they must have used some pretty good ear plugs in Silver's ears. Maybe they used some ridiculously small loads to just produce the puffs of smoke and added the shot sounds later.

The story on the hat was that he wanted his own distinctive signature crease & developed it in the shower initially, had his hats made like that afterward.

On the blank issue, when you're either around animals or up close to people in tight spaces, you don't use full-power blanks.
There are full, half, and quarter blanks available for various situations & sets.

Sure. I've seen Roy's hat as well as the video posted above showing how to make the double crease like he did.

Hatters do that for customers now, too. It's not something I personally care for, but I've seen pictures of modern custom hats done that way by Mike Miller at NW Hat Co, the Brass Rooster shop... and I'm sure Rand or Buckaroo Hatters will do it as well.

I'm well aware how blanks are made. I shoot fast draw and load my own blanks. But when the Lone Ranger is shooting, the gun is about a foot over his horses ears and didn't even make the animal flinch or blink his eyes.

I'm going with my idea that they load just enough powder to blow some smoke, then edit in the shot sounds later.

Maybe it's one of the hats that the top pops up, and a six gun comes out. Lol!

That's ok as long as you don't come stumbling out of the ol' saloon with your hat on backwards and run plum into a bad guy.
