Just found my favorite version of "Rhapsody in Blue" online. New York Philharmonic, conducted by Leonard Bernstein who also plays the piano lead.

This should be played LOUD. Of course.

Gershwin was, I believe, 26 when he composed this. Gad.

This was used by Disney in Fantasia 2000. Not a really successful movie, but almost as good as the original Fantasia.

Thanks, Jeff!

My high school history teacher was a real fan of the Gershwin brothers, and felt Rhapsody was a definitive turning point in American music, both jazz and otherwise. If memory serves, he even put in a question on a test concerning it, and a half century later I still think of him whenever I hear this song. Looks like Bernstein's played it at least once before, too! Guess there's a reason folks say the NY Philharmonic "owns" the song. ;)

Not exactly an easy tune to whistle is it. 17 minutes of music and all that's running through my head is about a 27 note melody. But I agree, it's one heck of a piece of music.

There are so many people that have never had the pleasure of listening to a full orchestra in person.
