Just purchased a used MK II Competition Model that has a few scratches in the slab sides of the stainless steel barrel. Any recommendations on the best way to remove the scratches without further damage to the barrel?

Scotch Brite Pads will match the factory brushed finish if done with the grain in nice straight lines as per the factory..
I use the Grey & then the white along with Mothers polish..
I've read were guys have also used the Maroon & a very used green pad like the ones you do the dished with..
This MKII had some scratches & now looks factory Fresh..
If the scratches are deep you may have to use some fine sandpaper first such as 600 grit first, remember to always sand with the paper & pads with the brushed finish in it's straight line pattern for best looking results..

I just poured them back into my mega range container seen in this pic..
This container is sweet & has a hole big enough to get your hand in there & the lid can hold around 150 that you can pull over while loading up all those magazines..

Well dudes, here's what worked:

Started with 400 grit waterproof sandpaper, wrapped around a piece of paint stir stick, and light machine oil. It removed the scratches and left a finish that matched the rest of the barrel. Didn't have to move on to 600 or finer. The light machine oil helps with the cutting action and the stir stick keeps the surface flat.
