I hope I will use the right terminology here but I think most folks will understand my question.

After I feed a round and after the feed latch (Is this the correct term?) returns to it's upright position, the shell moves slightly backwards toward the stock. Then when I try to feed in the next shell, the feed latch won't depress because it's just catching the back end of the previous shell. So with my left hand I need to use a finger to push the previous shell forward while at the same time depressing the feed latch. Once the latch is depressed I can get the next shell in, obviously. But then I have to repeat the process for the next shell. Any ideas? I wonder if I need a new magazine spring?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The feed latch could be sticking, that's the tang (I believe its part #43)inside that holds the shells in the tube. It needs to pop out to catch the shell.

I have seen them stick if not assembled correctly.

I have 2- 1100s and 1- 1187.

I will definitely check that out. I have had mine since about 1980 or so and this is the FIRST time I have ever had an issue. Based on it's age I also just ordered from Brownells a new gas seal and a piston and piston seal kit. For about 30 bucks shipped I think it was worth it especially since the gas seal was shredded a bit.

Well it turns out that 43 is the feed latch itself and I couldn't find anything on the 1100 schematic that affects that magazine area other than a magazine spring retainer. It would seem to me it makes sense as it's obvious something is pushing the shell rearwards. Maybe it's just old and it slipping back a bit .

Let's hear some more ideas!

I feed the 1st one in most of the way, then use a second shell to finish the 1st-- then a 3rd to finish the second. Never have the problem you have. Might work for you too?

The feed latch is what holds the shells in the magazine and wont allow them to move back till the action is cycled. The part that flips up is called the Carrier.

If you had it apart to clean and or its needs to be cleaned because its sticking. The shells are sliding past it, its either installed wrong (easy to do I have done it myself) or it's broken or bent and you need a new one.

Here is a link to the latch with a picture.

Sometimes pictures are easier.

Thank you! Pictures ARE sometimes worth a thousand words. I can see exactly what you mean and what Rugerforme was trying to tell me. I'm going to thoroughly brush and clean that area today and drop a spot of oil on it to see if it helps. I can see the tang now that I know what to look for and it seems OK but who knows. It may just be worn down from thousands of rounds. I did install the piston kit yesterday and guess what. My old one (The factory original) was installed backwards! Surprised the gun kept shooting all these years!

I've had this problem a time or two on an 11-87. It only happened when I did not feed the shell far enough into the magazine tube. Now I make sure (on both my 1100 and 11-87) to shove my thumb all the way down in there.
