were any of these factory threaded for muzzle devices

purchased a 196 that has a comp on it i want gone , its not budging and looks to have red lock tight between the FSB and comp that squeezed out when it was installed , it has a small hole underneath that looks to have a broken off set screw in it , either way threaded or not im dremeling it off this weekend since i can get it to budge with reasonable

First I'd get a penlight and see if you can see a set screw or something else. You can try putting small (and increasingly larger) allen or flat screwdrivers in to see if anything fits to loosen what may be in there. If you determine there is a screw in there, but can't get it out, I would drill it out, you'll only hurt a few of the barrel threads. I would then put the barrel in a padded vise and heat the compensator with either a heat gun or a butane torch to melt the (Loctite ?) and grab the compensator with a large pair of vise grips see if it moves at all.

looked at it with the magnifier app on my phone , definitely what ever type of head the screw had on it its been broken off , i will try drilling it before the dremel

drilled the set screw remnant , scored the compensator a few times , touched some heat , got it to turn , realized it was not threaded and put a punch through the holes of the comp and gave it a few wacks and it popped right off , just ordered a 1/2 x 28 RH die and thread starter , only had the setup for AK , so will thread it Wednesday

mean while i can now get to work cleaning it up

this rifle came with the factory rings and the rear peep assembly was removed , are the flip down sights the correct ones for a 196 series rifle , it only says 187-188 series , if not the right ones does anyone know what rear sight is correct , i have a Leupold VX im putting on the rifle but would still like to have the correct rear sight as well , its my OCPD kicking in , thanks in advance

Looks like the front sight has been modified, too. OCD being what it is, adding a scope might not be much help. Meaning, it may only be 'open sight' accurate.

i see someone notched the FSB , probably to help sight picture , how would that affect scoping it

You’re welcome, good luck and keep us posted on how it going.
well i was going to get the m14 muzzle device and the m1a rear sight , but they were sold out of the muzzle device so i said screw it and reverting back to the original plan ,just thread the muzzle and factory flip rear

project is coming along nicely , the rear sight was missing , arrived today , evidently there is a piece called windage lock plate thats missing , the screw was there , it has to be the flip down so it will not interfere with the scope so not interested in tech sights , these will be backup

cant find that windage plate anywhere , scoured the net , so looks like i will have to fabricate one

have the rough fit , need to clean the edges , drill the hole , countersink the hole, and finish will probably be paint , it actually seats just right , it was hard to hold everything together correctly with one finger , operate the camera and get a decent photo , once the screw cinches it the sight will not move and the locking block seats flush

has it clamped hard , cleaned up around the screw head with JB Weld , once it cures i will back the screw out , clean it up and spray black

Looks like you’re just about ready to go sight it in.
i have a Leupold VX roughly installed , still need the flash suppressor , should have next week , once thats in hand i will thread the barrel , bought a Choat handguard , when i went to remove it the clip pulled off and was still stuck to the barrel , bad mash on the rivit , emailed them and they replace free of charge , Choate is amazing

so im close to having it finished , thinking about a stabilizer

before and after , strut should be here by saturday , went with a Bravo Company extended bird cage threaded the barrel i think it was thursday , went with some black to contrast some of the stainless suppose to warm up this week so maybe the 4 inches of ice will go away and i can set the shooting bench up and sight it in
