Reloading 357 Maximum

I have desired a 357 Maximum Ruger revolver for a long time. I have never seen one for sale here in Canada. Today I purchased a Thompson Centre Encore with three barrels....22 LR, 223 and 357 Maximum. With this I received two boxes of Remington factory ammunition, two hundred unfired brass and a hundred once fired. I wonder if those who have a Ruger in 357 Maximum have any reloading advise and pet loads? Also, I do not have a set of dies. Can I use my .357 magnum dies? I tried to search here but I keep getting advised the search function is not available. Is this board having difficulty? David
 
357 dies will work depriming may be the only problem...RCBS makes the longer primer pin for their dies which is what I have. On the Lasc web site there is a wealth of info on this caliber...here is a link. Good luck and good shooting.

Being as you have a single shot you have a great deal of flexability. I'll let you know what I do in a Ruger. 200gr. gas check on top of 18grs. of 4227. Just enough for me. Could do a little bit hotter, but I'm happy with that. Search for some posts by David Bradshaw and the Max or go over to singleactions.com, lee martin has posted some good loads. Another place to find some loads on the thompson are over at IHMSA.com and even at DanWesson website. It's a great cartridge, you WILL be impressed with it and enjoy it! Coogs.
 
Thanks for the information. Coogs, I tried www.ihmsa.com and it will not work. The seller also had a set of dies and about four hundred Hornady 180 grain bullets for it which were specifically for silhouettes. I should go back and pick those two items up.
 
I own a couple of Contender barrels in 357 Max. I like the 180's a lot in it. I cast most of my slugs. I'd get the dies & the bullets, and never look back.

Most loading manuals have excellent info on the 357 Max. I tend to prefer the heavier bullets, (as intended,) to where I get excellent performance.
 
Thanks contender. I have e-mailed to have the dies and bullets set aside so I am on my way. I would like to use it for hunting whitetails here but we are not allowed to use handguns. Can a butt stock and fore-end be purchased for the Encore? David
 
Contender, what mold do you have, I have the Ruger revolver so limitations on OAL must be considered and my 200 gr rifle bullet mold is too long. I agree, pick up the ammo and mold.

Barrel length is a factor in converting to rifle but the butstock and forend are available.
 
In the T/C Encore or Contender, you must have at least 16" of barrel to make it a rifle by adding a stock. The Contender barrels I have are both the 10" & the 14".
I'd have to go look at my molds to give exact info, but I have a pair that the bullets work great in my Maxi's.
 
its the barrel length that matters, maybe, don't know tho, adding a muzzle contraption to get over 16 might be legal....
 
The laws in Canada differ from those in the USA. Barrel length makes a difference here if it is a semi-auto. For a single shot it is total length. If, when it is set up with a butt stock, it is twenty-six inches or more it will be legal. At least that is the way my old memory remembers it. David
