Just picked up this 1985 5.5 Redhawk in .44

I didn't realize the "heftiness" of this wheelgun. It's a big 'ol chunk of metal.

Anyway, got it along with a "Ruger" soft pistol case, a leather holster, a set of Pachmayr grips, (2) speedloaders w/case, and 40 rounds of .44 mag ammo all to the tune of $500. I think I did ok on the deal. The gun doesn't appear to have been shot more than a cylinder or two. I'm going to disassemble it tonight and give it a good cleaning.

......just wanted to share.

WAIT A MINUTE !!!!!! LET ME GO CHECK MY GUN-SAFE !!!!

THAT'S the exact same gun I own...and is positively, absolutely, without exception, wholly, entirely, definitely, completely, precisely, and entirely the BEST REVOLVER I OWN...including lots of Smiths, Colts, Rugers, and others.
You are gonna LOVE it! (And after practice...you'll notice it's the easiest to pull the trigger DA...lock-up the cylinder repeatedly... and then slowly administer the final "SA" trigger/hammer-fall of ANY revolver ever made!

In my opinion...this was Ruger's finest revolver ever made.

Congratulations!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm heading to the range tomorrow and this will be in the range bag.

I'm a new Redhawk owner as well. Mine is a 2007 vintage but the same configuration as yours.

I was extremely pleased with how it shoots .44 mags. Next I want to pick up some .44 special to see how those shoot.

Congratz!

Congratulations. Great combination of strength and power. It will last forever!

My ~1985 .41 Redhawk 5.5" is my second most accurate revolver [after 6"Python].

You have made a wise choice.

Regards,

Dyson

You got one heck of a steal...errr...I mean deal! :) A new 5½" 44Mag Redhawk (if you can find one) will run you about 700 dollars. I was searching for one NIB or even gently used until I got frustrated. Then I found a NIB Super Redhawk with the 7½" barrel for 700 out the door. I do not regret going with a longer barrel though.

You will love your RH, that's for sure. If you do not so so already, the RH will be a tack driver with handloads. I shot my first ever handloads that I made myself and the results were wonderful. A bulk 240g JSP bullet from First Class Bullets and Brass over 19g of Alliant 2400 netted me a 1" group at 10yrds from a rest. Not counting a flyer, I got a 1¼" group with the same bullet over 23.5g of Hodgdon Lil'Gun. A shooting buddy of mine from the forum, Iron Mike Golf, shot six of those Lil'Gun loads himself as he is steadier from a rest than I am. He put all 6 into one ragged hole that could be covered by a Sacagawea dollar.

Wow. Nice gun. Nice score. I'm still keeping my eyes open for a 5.5" Redhawk .44 Magnum.

I know a guy who wants my 4" Redhawk but won't give up his 5-1/2". I told him I'd trade.

I would keep the 4" RH and go find another 5.5" RH. I would love to see pics of the 4"er.

I took the gun to the range and I had to laugh at the accuracy. This shoots extremely well. I just got done totally disassembling it and giving it a nice cleaning and polish. It's now in the safe next to his other siblings.

Here ya go. This is an actual 4" not the 4.2". I'm keepin' this beast. And will pay money for a 5-1/2".

:D :D

Wow! I just picked up the exact same model today. My first .44mag.
I came directly to this forum to read as much as I could about the Redhawk.
I paid the same price as the OP and got a weapon that hasn't seen the light of day since 1990. I'm not even sure it's been fired. Can't find any powder residue and no cylinder ring and in the original cardboard box. Ser# dates it 1985 mfg. I won't be a safe queen with me---I intend to enjoy the shooting.

I took mine to the range and shot it some. It handled very well so no complaints here.

Only complain is the lead ammo I used. I forgot how hard it was to remove that from the barrel. I don't see how people shoot a lot of lead on a daily basis.

I polished it up really good so I need to take a new pic...preferably an outdoor pic and post it.

Hugh, thanks for posting that 4" RH. Wish I could find one locally like that.
