i was looking at a ruger 1911 a few days ago and it must have had a 18 to 20 lb recoil spring in it? they said it was new and appeared to be so.. i've never had a 1911 that had more than a 16 lb recoil spring, which is considered standard. why is ruger putting in such a heavy recoil spring from the factory? i looked at their replacement parts site and the available recoil spring seems to be only 16
lbs. why did ruger put the 18 lb + recoil spring from the factory? thanks for any info. markc

Who says they did ? Are you saying you can tell he difference between a 16 pound spring and an 18 pound spring by looks or feel ?

I think you would want to evaluate your case ejection pattern for the chosen load and decide later if the factory spring is working for you.

I use Wilson 18# in my SR1911 Commander and shoot 200-230 grain bullets between 750-800 fps and the cases usually all fall roughly close to 4 o'clock about 4-6' away.

Occasionally I get a case that takes a funny bounce off the slide and lands almost right in front of me, but that's not common.
