I have had a chance to put a few boxes thru my special run 77/22M with short barrel (18.5", blued, synthetic stock). Not much remarkable to report.

Accuracy might be really good. My only session on a bench rest was VERY windy and horizontal spreads were 2" plus. Vertical spread looked like a shooter better than me might shoot moa with a high power scope.

New 77 rimfires definately have better triggers than the last one I bought 15+ years ago. Not great, but better. Bluing is better because the metal has a nicer polish than my previous guns. Can't find any "warts" anywhere.

Short barrel is louder than the 20-24 inchers.

Velocity diff vs long barrels is less than the amount of standard deviation in a 10 shot string.

Demated the barreled action from stock and it looks like Ruger attempts to provide a fitted barrel support. It doesn't have the seam down the middle from the molding operation as I have seen others report. The cross members in the fore end all show a contact point with the barrel that looks fairly even.

Overall, I really like this gun. The missing 1-1/2" of barrel length makes for a very handy rifle to carry with a sling. It also makes it a poor choice for precision bench rest shooting as you really notice how hard it is to hold the skinny little barrel steady.

I currently have a pretty crummy 4X scope on the gun. Can't decide to put a tiny Leupold 2.5X ultra light for easy carrying or a Weaver 3-9XAO rimfire to try to exploit potential accuracy. Maybe buy both and put off buying the goofy Turkish 9mm auto pistol I have next on my shopping list.

In Denver area, 22WMR ammo remains the biggest challenge of just about ANY caliber. I got to go shooting today just because I got 3 boxes from a private party who no longer owned a 22 and was dumping his stash.

If you can find some of the Hornady 30 grain or Remington 33 grain stuff, that is the most accurate in my 77/22M. CCI 40 grain is a little less accurate, but it is half the price so I shoot that instead.

There seems to be a pretty stong concensus that those super light, super fast bullets are the more accurate. I did best with 40 gr fmj and less so with 40 gr hp and (my favorite) the Winchester tin core hollow points. The bullet is full size like a 40, but only weights 28 gr. because of the tin core instead of lead. The wind really blew these around even though they leave the muzzle at 2200fps. I couldn't match your groups with ANYTHING--old age eyeballs and shaky trigger finger.

Pat, it was a "clean up" gun from Davidsons distributing. Ruger regularly makes non catalogued runs of weird stuff from leftover parts. If you go to Gunbroker and search for 77/22, then resort for new guns only, you will see a bunch of them. Unfortunately only a hundred or so were built. Davidsons ran the batch at a low sale price ($505 + all local dealer markups, fees, taxes) but now the GB dealers are selling a little higher. If they have pics and the barrel looks short, and is blued in a synthetic stock, it is a Davidsons gun. Davidsons said it was 20, some of the GB listings even call it 20 but it IS 18.5.

btw, you are also 20 miles closer to my new favorite shooting range at Nunn. Great Guns. Dedicated pistol, rimfire and center fire to 300 yards. Nice benches, covered, faces north, target boards always in good condition and pre drilled stand up holes at all distances, staple guns always full, well sanded for when it rains, friendly and cheap if you join for a year--180 or 20 per day.

Edited to add:
I shouldn't have said a "bunch of them". I only see one now. Note he says it is a 20, but i assure you if you email him and ask him to measure it, it is a 18.5 and it came from Davidsons. Here is the link.

hehe, once upon a time--back in the 60's when my Dad was driving us up to fish the Poudre. But, they remodeled the joint and now they buy the rolls from a bakery. Still oversize but not nearly as tasty. I would much rather be in Joplin having a Steak n Shake.

It was closed by the time I got on.
Thanks!

Nunn is close to where I need to do some scouting for prairie dogs (Nat Grass Lands).
I'll take a look as I go by.

I got in with Boulder about thirty years ago,
so I have all of what I need, out to 200 yards.

Update on accuracy. I finally got ideal conditions at the range and spent the afternoon trying to get this cheap scope sighted in properly. Mostly was shooting about an inch and a half to two inches 5 shot groups with the occaisional flyer. I happened to look trhu my spotting scope after 3 shots on one of the groups and couldn't believe it. More luck than skill here, but this is the smallest group I have ever put up at 100 yards. About .6. Note the target grid marks are less than 1". My printer printed them out at about 15/16. CCI 40gr tmj. This rifle definately has potential. I think I will go with a really good 3-9AO Leupold or Weaver.
