Just wondering if I have this option. Can the .243 #1 light sporter 22 inch barrel be fit to the #3 receiver?

And fit to take up the area that was left open in front of the block for the rim of the 45-70?

Can the extractor be properly modified? Or must a new one be installed?

Any other issues?

Thanks!

The # 1 barrel shoulder might have to be trimmed if it does not torque up in proper position. If it goes a little too to far, a thin steel shim might be the ticket. Depending on how much has to be trimmed, the barrel face might need to trimmed as well. Of course, proper headspace will govern all the above machinations. In the worst case, the chamber might have to deepened a bit.

Don't worry about the clearance between the breech block and the barrel face. The #1 barrel will be chambered deep enough to close up the space to the factory spec The factory leaves more space than most smiths do when they rebarrel. The extractor will need to be altered for the 243 case head, but that should not be a problem for competent smith , even if it means welding it up and reshaping.
