Hello, new to reloading and all the local shops are still out of powder and primers. I picked up a Lee Turret press and the dies I need and have been saving my brass for a couple years. I'm heading to a local gun show this weekend and would like to find some pistol primers and some W231 or Hp38 powder for loading 38, 357, and 44.
What is a decent price for primer and powder? Never bought any before so I wouldn't know if I was overpaying.

I buy my powder and primers online but you can use their prices for reference.

231 Powder $21.00 / Lb. --- Primers $30.00 / 1000.
add whatever you think is an in-stock fee. say $5.00

i've been paying $22-$28 for powder and $33-$36 for 1000 primers at a local store.............

that's pretty much where we are in NE TX (with the "honest shops") .... if you can find anything. We still seem to be suffering from the empty shelf syndrome though.

We just got a shipment of primers locally. The previous order allowed the gun shop to sell them for $30/1000. The latest shipment reflected a price increase due to the LGS getting hit with an increase. Now they are $32/1000.
Powder has been $24-$28 a pound locally.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
My recent purchases have been $35 or better on powder, and about $40 on primers. Midsouth has really good prices. I haven't ordered primers from them because the shipping up to AK is really expensive.

I wouldn't expect those prices (ave $33 per 1k primers and $25/lb for powder) to be considered a "premium" now. That's probably going to be the norm for the foreseeable future.

Don't forget to add in the hazardous shipping fees when you compare mail order vs local purchase.

No luck at the Inverness gun show so I'm still looking. Anybody local have small pistol primers and some powder they would like to sell to a new reloader?

A buddy and I had a large order for powder and primers ($1300+) with MidSouth since JANUARY. They had everything except the primers; this past week I finally decided to tell them to ship everything and keep the primers on backorder. Then I put another order in for just primers figuring that I'll get order #2 next year when order #1 is partially used-up. Go figure.................

Watch the forums and join those that have high traffic. I just landed a huge deal for powder. It was a 200 mile round trip but it paid off in spades.

Don't know if you live close to any CAS clubs. If so give the Pres. a call. Most of us CAS guys know where to get stuff. Most of the time a club will have a member that sells reloading stuff at the right price.
Worth a try. Here is a link to SASS http://www.sassnet.com/clubs/index.php

Thanks for the link, one of our fine forum members was nice enough to sell me 1k primers and a lb of HP38 so I'm good to start! I am gonna check out one of the local sass matches though. Maybe I can meet an experienced reloader that lives nearby to check out my techniques.
