I just heard from my older sister that one of my younger sisters has been told to evacuate her home immediately due to what is being called the Creek Fire. It started Saturday morning and as of 3 PM our time it had consumed some 50-60 thousand acres. It's moving exceptionally fast. Temps today on the valley floor hit as high as 108. Somehow this valley heat creates strong winds in the mountains and...

Late last night the National Guard rescued over 200 people by airlifting them out in Blackhawks and a Chinook. Picked them up off of the boat launch ramp which was surrounded by fire. Some of the rescued folks had to actually jump in the lake to avoid the flames. Many suffered burns along with broken bones. The fire surrounded the Mammoth Pool Reservoir. Campers were trapped as the only road in/out was impassable.

My sister Kerry lives between Bass Lake and Yosemite in Cedar Valley. She keeps her property well cleared; in fact her place is often used as a staging area by fire crews. Maybe her preparations will save her home and outbuildings but who knows. She says they're not using it as a staging area this time because it's just too dangerous now. Sis says she got her dogs but couldn't find her cats. Trailered up her 2 horses and is on her way out, I hope.

Lots of little communities and some larger towns inits path, like North Fork (probably ashes by now) Wawona, Fish Camp, Bass Lake, Oskhurst, Coursegold and on and on. I know some of you are familiar with the area.

Anyway, prayers for the citizens and for the fire crews sure would help.

This one is bad. It has doubled in size to over 80 thousand acres since this morning, with still zero containment. High temps in the hundreds and strong winds are forecast for tomorrow, making conditions much worse. My sister is safe at this time, thankfully.

I saw that fire on 2 different news channels last night. I understand fire & how quickly & all it can get super dangerous faster than one can imagine.

1960 I was stationed at Wawona for the NPS. Sorry to hear this. That is beautiful country. I was both a blister rust checker and fire fighter there. I was on several huge fires that year too. Hard to believe now that was sixty years ago!

We were advised to leave the Mt Hood area in Oregon because of high expected winds and a fire at Mt Hood Meadows. We were leaving anyway... home now.

Prayers for all those afflicted by the fires this season.

Sent prayers for all in this situation. While my family members are not in danger from the fires, they are close enough that smoke has become a major health issue along with the high temperatures. They are in their upper seventies and do not have air conditioning. They need to get out of the area.

We live in SW Utah and I have never seen it as smokey as it is today. Has to be from the california fires.

The fire has doubled in size today to over 135,500 acres, still zero % containment. High temps (109) and high winds (40-50 mph) along with steep terrain, dry underbrush and thousands of dead trees killed by bark beetles equals a freaking disaster.

It's going to get worse before it gets better. Damn.

Hi,

Prayers come from down here for your sister and all the others affected by this fire, Jeff.

I'm sitting about a half a block outside of a mandatory evac area here right now. Estimates run up to 21,000 people affected, though I think that's an inflated number from the media since about 8000 were evacuated in last month's fire. We burned up 30k+ acres last month, then a second one over the weekend has added about 8600 acres so far. Containment from the first one was almost 100%, with 90% or so control, but they don't expect containment on this one until around 9-18. Most all the terrain is too steep and inaccessible to ground personnel so almost everything's being fought from the air. Add that every ground crew probably has multiple incidents on their list and it's hard to be in two places at once. I can only imagine what it will take to get yours which is at least 15 if not 20 times as big.
