I hope all goes as well as could be expected.
In November of last year, my son and DIL discovered that their 7-year-old autistic daughter (my granddaughter) had cataracts in both eyes - fast growing ones that virtually blinded her within 2 months. Being only slightly verbal, she couldn't say anything to signal her sight loss.
The day after her first cataract surgery, the nurse took off the bandage. My granddaughter blinked and saw the nurse's face. She touched the nurse's face with her little hand and with a huge smile said, "Oh, pretty, pretty." My DIL said she almost cried, and she almost cried again while describing the event to me on a phone call.
The other eye's surgery followed by two weeks, and likewise went well. During the following 9 months my granddaughter's verbal skills have exploded. She even sings a little tune during which she says the days of the week. Grandma and grandpa are so blessed by this little one and her amazing parents.
My point: keep the faith. It's a marvel the skill, competence and technology that today's eye surgeons possess.

So went in for follow up this morning the young surgeon took off the eye shield and my eye was cloudy swollen and generally a mess. Eye surgeon apologized and said he's never had a surgery go quite this bad. He said he was vacuuming out the cataract and the envelope he created accidentally ruptured. Then to save the operation they put in a thicker lens that doesn't need so much support and did some large sutures to keep it in place. The surgeon then shot my eyeball full of steroids and antibiotics. He gave me his home number and told me to call if there are any complications. Now I'm scheduled to come back once a week to monitor healing and watch for infections. He said they might have to re-operate if it doesn't heal right. I've now got no medical insurance, 20,000 into medical bills mostly prepaid and no further access to medical care for depression and anxiety brought on by losing my vision to a fast moving cataract that blinded me in one eye. I turned 60 today so no Medicare either. No workman's comp because I wasn't injured at work. No unemployment because I quit and didn't technically get fired. I've applied for medical assistance but that if approved will only pay outstanding bills and I had to prepay most of the medical care to this point as they refuse care if you don't have insurance. My advice, don't get sick unless you're rich or retired on Medicare with a good supplemental plan. Best I can do now is let the credit card run. Something I've never ever done. Hope the doc can get my vision back and apply for jobs when my vision clears up which the doc loosely estimates might be 6-8 weeks best case scenario. Worst case the eye gets infected or never fully recovers from present damage. I asked about disability if the eye fails and was told if you have one eye you would never get disability. I asked who would hire a guy that can't see good enough to drive to work or go on a computer. Sorry for my rant, I'm a little scared being without any funds at the moment. Wish I was an illegal so I could get healthcare. Anyway your prayers mean more to me at this point than all the money I don't have.

I send my prayers for you in this difficult situation. I hope everything is temporary and that things will begin to improve soon. Please keep us updated. I hope that you find a solution for insurance. Can you be on Medicaid for awhile as you look for work and heal?

Wow! I can't remember ever hearing of one going so wrong. I would be real hesitant to let that surgeon operate on me again. I hope you can get it straightened out and carry on with your life. Think positive. Prayers offered up.

Yeah I applied for medical assistance but that takes a long time to process. We'll see.
Protoolman, so sorry about what you are experiencing. I’ve had 9 various eye surgeries and can imagine the fear you are going through and definitely understand. On the other side, with the surgeries I’ve experienced I can tell you the eye is one of the quickest healing parts of the body, and will continue prayers for your recovery.
I never thought I would say this but I would talk to an attorney about what you are going through and his admission to you while it’s still fresh. None of the rest of the surgeries that he has to do to repair what he did should be no additional cost to you. I would be very careful about explaining that to him.
