Hello
Was a photobucket user and had no problems retrieving pictures for forums or as an avatar here. Cannot figure out how to get the correct code to use as an avatar here.

I have a photo on Flickr, I can get it to link to a post two ways. Either the link or the picture shows up, got that figured out but when I try to use same photo as an avatar I either get "the value you entered is to long" or "The URL you specified is invalid"?
I'm new to their site and wasn't able to find anything there.

This is the link to the photo that says invalid url

This is the link to the photo that says value to long

and here it is full size

Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem in Imgur.
I can post pics easily,,, but for an avatar,,, no dice. I have a thread in the Lounge about this.

I read through your post but wasnt able to fix my problem with the responses provided. Figured i put a post in the gallery section before resorting to having my kids show me how lol

Is it an issue with Rugerforum?

Reduce your size to about 90x100.

Other than that .... I switched to Imgur so ain't much help with Flickr.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if you reduce the size and PM me the link you're using if I can insert it for you?

I'd be willing to try if you wanna.

The lower pic above is an avatar re-sized version of the upper pic (compare it's size to my avatar).

For imgur:

1) Isolate the pic wanted for an avatar from the rest of the pics via left-clicking on the pic.

2) At the bottom of the menu located along the RH side of the isolated pic is an integral resizer - select the avatar size (lower pic, above) by left-clicking on either "small thumbnail" or "small square" to highlight it.

3) Once the size is highlighted, higher in the same menu, select the "Direct Link" via clicking on it - the panel will turn green.

4) Copy the avatar url with your mouse on the green portion, then paste it into your avatar section here, with the usual (etc) before & after the pasted url (leaving no spacing between).

Love & lollipops,
Pete

After much searching I figured out how to use a picture stored on Flickr as an avatar on this site. Hopefully this helps others.

If you are using flickr then you select the photo you would like, use the big arrow icon to share, select BBCode, and than select Thumbnail from the drop-down window, then you will see a heap of code on the main window.

If you do not see the HTML/BBCode option it means that sharing is not turned on for that flickr picture. Find a different image.

Copying ALL that code DOES NOT WORK for the forum avatar.

You need to only copy the last part. It will start with https:// and you only copy to the .jpg part and not include the parentheses and other text.
should look like this: https://farm6.static.flickr.com/1111/piccode.jpg

On any link that you are using you have to remove the s from https:// The s will stop the image from being displayed.

e.g. https://example.com/1111/piccode.jpg will not display but http://example.com/1111/piccode.jpg will.

I found it was easiest to copy the whole text from the box and past it to a blank page in word ect and cut out what i needed there.

The extra step can probably be eliminated via pasting the code in the avatar section, then deleting any extraneous code prior to finishing the avatar submission.

It's the same with any avatar image, regardless of where you get it. Easiest way to grab an avatar image, whether it's hosted by Flickr, Imgur, or any other one on the web, is to right click on it and select Copy Image Location, then paste that into your avatar line. The reason is that this forum software (and some others) treat avatars differently than embedding a image in a post. It doesn't recognize img tags or other stuff. It just wants the raw location, which is what you will get if you "Copy Image Location" via the right click method. This assumes that the image is within the size limits for the forum.
