Coyote or medium size dog. Too big for a fox, and it's not a bobcat.... cat toes are almost square across the front with a broad, shallow pad across the back. Not a racoon, as they have very pronounced toes.... also, too big for a front paw, and the rear paw is long, shaped almost like a human foot.

I agree with you. Although the track appears to be in sandy soil, and hard to make out.
it is definitely a track from the Canid family.

It looks like a coyote or dog, fairly large. If you can check down by the pond,
see if you can find a more defined track in the mud. Be a big help.

Cat tracks will not leave claw impressions, as they have retractable claws , canines will leave claw marks , it's hard to tell since it had rained on that track, but I have seen plenty of bobcat tracks along the ceeks of Illinois in my many years of arrowhead hunting, sometimes dragging it's kill along with it

It's really not clear, but I think it's 4 plus shadow. A muddy print would be a lot more definitive. But I have set up and called in 'yotes based on less evidence -- and blew a lot of air for nothing, too. :wink:
 
I have forwarded the photo to a professional guide here in Texas, and did not tell him the
guesses we made. Will let y'all know what he says. This is a game anyway
right?
 
Having spent untold hours out in the field, and being an accomplished outdoorsman, my expert opinion/analysis is that it is most definitely the track of an animal, most likely the four-legged type. Without photos of the critter or actually seeing it in person, I can't be more exact than that, but it's definitely an animal.

This is in the woods 100 miles from me and I only go down every couple of months.... there are a lot of coyotes down there,... it just seemed too big to me... track is bigger than my 70lb dog.... I have to go back down this afternoon to attend a funeral tomorrow and may have time in the morning to go back down and look for a better track. I just thought it was interesting.
 
Dern, that's a good idea. I have two game cameras I don't use and could put one down there... but did not bring it with me. Me and the dawg are probably going for a walk down that way in about a half an hour. We'll look for more tracks, it is probably a coyote ... but they must have big feet. I was actually hoping it was a big cat but that does not seem to be one of y'alls options. Had a customer here in S.C. a few years back who went to take down an old tenant house way back in the woods on his family farm and there was a momma cougar and two cubs living there. He decided to put off the tear down.... called the dept. of wild life to report it and they informed him he was wrong there were no cougars in S.C. and were not interested in following up.

Had a similar experience a few years ago. Hunting on a cousin's property out in the county I saw what I was 90% sure was a cougar -- very large, tawny cat with a heavy tail as long as the rest of its body. It was late in the day, about 200 yards off, so I couldn't be 100% sure. But a week later I saw it well before dark, only about 50 yards away, and was able to observe it for several minutes. This sighting erased all doubts.

I told a game-warden acquaintance of mine, whose response was the same -- "No cougars in SC." Sez I, "Well, next time I see it I will shoot it, and you'll have proof." His response, "Oh, no. They are a protected species!"

Just like the unicorn, I guess...
 
Left front foot of a 40 to 45 pound dog. Thinking a female probably
blond to light brown color, short to medium length hair.
About 1 to 2 years old wearing a slightly faded green nylon collar.
I'm sure of this, except maybe the collar color, it might be black.
Cell phone pictures are never the best.

Well I have to admit my stupidity... I would have sworn that track was from the previous night and that it was from something bigger than my dog.... today I checked a track of my dog bounding down a hill and it is the same. So, that is Beauregard, he is a Catahoula leopard.....
