Original .45 Vaquero case colored

Is there a premium for the case colored frame vs the blue?

Think that depends on if you're buying or selling. some of the cowboy action shooters may pay a very slight premium for the case color frames but even that is questionable. I have 2 45 LC vaquero's with case color frames. Neither is for sale.

The color cased hardened vaqueros are very nice and sometimes you will pay more. The color cased hardened guns I have seen that have been in cowboy action have had the color worn off of them from repeatedly used in the holster.

You might be able to get a little more for it, if the imitation CCH is in good condition. If it's peeling or rubbed off, then I'd say no.

If enough people refinish the CCH frames, it may get to the point that an original in perfect or near perfect condition may fetch a higher tag, but I think right now, most people just don't like it because it's not durable. I don't think we have the information to be at that point right now.

The thing about the case-colored Vaqueros is that they are handsome when new, and gain more beauty as they age and the case color wears off.

Case in point: Look at the old Colts, whose (which?) genuine case hardened colors have worn off, yet they retain much of their attractiveness. So a Vaquero is not an old Colt by any means, yet it is still an attractive and great shootin' sixgun.

That's correct. It's not actual CCH. Just an applied coating that has had a tendency to not hold up well. I haven't seen any Vaqueros with this peeling off that look good to me. Maybe when it's all off, I'll change my mind. But I doubt it.

I personally don't really think there is a premium for a case colored original Vaquero.
That said, the coloring on the two revolvers that I have seem to be fine. One is fading, but I think that just adds to the 'look'. If I 'really' wanted the look, I'd send mine in to Turnbull and have him do his magic... And maybe someday I will.

I collected the large frame Vaquero while they were in production and with several of the post production "clean-up" guns. As far as I know they NEVER MADE an all blued large frame Vaquero, just the bright stainless (BSS) and color case (CCH) finish ones.

It was several years into the production of the medium framed New Vaquero that a limited edition was offered with a blued frame and "ivory" grips in addition to the BSS and CCH ones. Not long afterward the CCH finish was dropped altogether and only BSS and all-blued guns were cataloged.

Sooo, if you are looking a large frame Vaquero with a blued frame, it is likely that it was re-blued and refinished guns generally command less money than one with original finish.

You know I am quite fond of the case color models whether they be the large frame on top or the mid frame in the middle or the small single six frame. I believe CCB revolvers will always command a better price than the all blue guns, to the right person anyway.

Nice looking group of Rugers. The Color Case finish really sets them off. And the grips are great too. Nice collection.

I only have one and it is a 45Colt/45ACP convertible. In fact these are all convertibles. I did change the stocks on the SS one.

You know when I started fooling around with these case color guns I must have got infected or something. I thought this set was the ticket...

Then I though I need the same thing in the Birdheads.....

Then these two found there way in.....

And then the infection got real bad....

Then I found three of the New Vaqueros in CC and I knew then I was doomed !!

If you find a large frame original Vaquero in an all blue finish, it's most likely refinished by Ruger who did them free if one complained about the CC fading.

Those 'series' collections of yours take my breath away. I thought my Ruger virus was bad. But you have a whole new strain of that virus.

I like the SS Vaqueros for SASS shooting. My .45's still look like new after many years of use. They're easy to clean and if I get any scratches on them I just use my bench buffer and buff them out.
