Ok, 6 1/2" OM converted 44 magnum flattop. 5 digit serial number, nice plum color loading gate and decent black eagle walnut grips. The finish is very good but the cylinder has wear. Being given that info, tell 'bout it. It's certainly shooter with the cylinder finish and being converted but is there much value to the old girl? Sorry not up on OM's at all.

I'd rather have that gun :!: than a new model FT :) a little cold blueing would help but I like it as IS---450 dollars :?: :?

Looks perfect to me. I'll give you $455!

[edit] Oooo, just saw it was converted. Do you have the original parts to put it back?

Nice ol' Type III. I see the "off set slot" ejector housing and a collared base pin. It may have the early rear sight screw (with an index mark) and/or the early "capped" base pin latch nut. In any case it's a perfect example for a bit of "fixin' up"!

I had one in similar shape and sent it to Ruger for a new barrel (it just would NOT shoot with the original barrel) and a blue job. I found an interesting hammer at a gun show, had a buddy plate the end of the base pin and fitted a brass XR3-RED grip frame. It's one of my favorites!

Go ahead buy it. The dollars will be gone otherwise and you will not have anything to show for them.

Ahhh, it's here already  , just unsure of what to do with it. Keep? Sell? Just not into OM's or .44 mags. Still wonder why I bought it.

Seeing as any firearms are bought with the "gun fund" $$$'s, it's either going to one gun or another. Not going anyplace else. :)

Love it! I found an extra barrel already cut to 5 1/2" for mine. So I cut it to 4 5/8" and installed it. Also installed a stainless grip frame with it's wide trigger from an Old Army blackpowder in place of the dragoon grip. A very nice package and one of my favorites too.

I guess I can understand people getting the conversion done on an OM if they think they have to carry 6 rounds loaded, but to do it to a Flat-top is just a (expletive deleted) shame. If I had the parts to fix it I'd sure buy it. Without being able to convert it back to what it should be...probably not.

Just sayin',

Dave,

You're coming at this with the knowledge, experience and passion of a true Ruger collector and purist like the rest of us. We feel your pain.

To most buyers of Rugers they don't know a flat top from a fried egg, it's just a another tool like a hammer or shovel and treated little better. Having a free conversion to carry safe with 6 shots sounded like a good deal to those. But to the chagrin of we collectors that appreciate rugers and especially the OMs as the engineering marvels and pleasure deriving works of art that they are.

We'll be the caretakers until we're gone and bring back every one that we can rescue and or restore. Take heart, there's original parts to be found and convert these back. Glad you're on the forum, I can tell that you belong here.

I know where there's OM parts, but for me, it's not worth the $ converting it back.

The price of the OM part sets can sure kill what, at first glance, looked like a good deal... It is easy to justify a part set for a properly priced good condition and hard to find example but those cosmetically worn old war horses when sold as solid old 44 magnums can easily be way overpriced when you figure in the cost of an original part set. More of a reason to grab every OM part set you can get your hands on. Can't wait until the converted OM falls in your lap... :)
