1958 Flattop .44

I've been going through this old flattop, complete disassembly and cleaning, etc.. It's the same age as me, so needing a little maintenance and TLC. Found it was missing the gate detent plunger - I have one on the way from Jack First along with a complete set of screws, which have suffered at some point in the past from ill-fitting screwdrivers and/or a clumsy "gunsmith". I have the factory walnut grip panels, but trying on this set of flat bottom Magnatusks with a red eagle medallion. I kinda like them. Whatta ya think?

Thanks, guys. My screw set is supposed to be here today. I'll get those installed and be ready for some range time with some good home-cast Keith or Thompson design bullets.

Very nice looking. And once you replace the plunger & the screws,, it'll be "right" and you can truly enjoy it! Preserve those walnuts for it, and smile at the ivory look it wears!

I'm liking the feel of the flat-bottom grips, especially on the XR3 frame. Gives my pinky finger a little more purchase. Small but noticeable difference.

Very nice looking stocks on that sixgun, I have had excellent service from Jack First for many years from when he was in Lancaster,Ca to his current location on some old ColtSAA parts a few weeks ago.

Nice gun! Think about a steel grip frame. It won’t be so front heavy. A steel new model XR3 with wide trigger using your new grips would be nice. Or an XR3 RED Old Army with wide trigger will make shooting 44 Mag more comfortable. And top it off with an old model Super Blackhawk wide hammer.

I bought a firing pin for an Astra Cadiz from Jack First a few years ago. Their service is first class.
Very nice revolver and I like the grips. Do you know of a source?

I have a 7 1/2" flattop and another one cut to 4 5/8" that have steel XR3-RED gripframes and other custom work. I think I'm going to keep this one all original, except for the grips. Agree I like the feel of the all-steel setup better, and the XR3-RED frame fits my hand better. Still, I wanted one that was "as-issued."

The grips came from Magnatusk directly, sourced on ebay.
